GRADUATION at last! It seems that only yesterday we were "frc:shies" looking forward
eagerly to four years of high school. As I look back to those days of fun and frolic, I
can remember so well how I wi hed I were a SE1 1IOR, but now I almost wish I were
only that afraid "frcshie" again.
I really am not complaining, but I am anxious to know what next year is going to bring
and to know what I am going to find over the horizon.
The la t few months of high chool brought many fond memories plus much hard work.
'I here were the seemingly endless assignments of research papers, term papers, so-

cial problems projects, essays, College Entrance exams and the many application
forms which required many, many answers. We have finally finished with all of these
things, at least, for the time being. Now we all have a big job ahead of us. That job
is to do something profitable with our training. Now we must begin to apply what we
have supposedly learned.
Ea h person has his own dreams and wishes about hi future. In order to make them
all materialize each person mu t face many difficult deci ions wisely. It is in these
brief but important moments that the real maturity shows and counts. It is not how
many touchdowns you were able to make, nor is it how many times you were up for a
particular queen. These honors are transitory.
When we were fre hmen, we thought that all it took to succeed was a beautiful face or
talent on the athletic field. As we have grown, we have seen that the e attributes are
fine, but if one is not a truly mature per on, he does not have permanent ucccs .
We have all changed in various ways. Some of u still have no definite plans about the
future, but they are beginning to form in the backs of our minds.
Each year at graduation two of the most outstanding people in each class arc honored
by being selected as Valedictorian and Salutatorian. This year thing were a little
different. Bruce Chiddister wa announced Valedictorian and Donna Holzinger and
haron Loveles · tied for the honor of Salutatorian.
I think that we would agree that these four years at Widefield have been wonderful
years which we will never forget. It is a school to be praised and appreciated.

Sharon Loveless begins the Salutatorian
address.

Donna Holzinger completes the Salutatorian address.

"SUMMARY 1962 FOOTBAll SEA SO "

The 1962 Football Season turned out to be one of the best in Widefield's history. Out-weighed but not outspirited, the Gladiator team combined great team work and sportsmanship to turn in a record of six wins and
three losses, and a third place in the Pikes Peak League.
The two high points of the season came with victories over Brighton, (13-6) and Cheyenne Mountain, (13-12).
Brighton was the first played in Widefield's newly completed stadium. Determined to christen their new field in
victory, the Gladiators opened the scoring with a one yard touchdown pa s in the second quarter. Brighton scored
several plays later. \\ ith the score 6-6, the arne became an agonizing defensive battle, the ball going from
team to team. In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Brighton managed to march all the way to the Gladiator
six yard line, then fumbled the ball. The Glads recovered, and eleven plays later hulled the ball over from the
one yard line to win the game (13-6).
Cheyenne Mountain invaded Widefield territory bent on revenge for last year's loss, by a score of (13-12).
Ironically, they lost again by that identical score. When the smoke cleared from the first quarter clash, the
excited fans saw both teams scoreless, with Cheyenne on Widefield's one yard line. At the start of the second
quarter, Cheyenne went in for the score, but the extra point failed. Four downs later, Widefield passed for
twenty four yards and a score. The try for the extra point failed. The game tied, both teams dug in and the game
continued scoreless. In th:! third quarter Widefield scored on a run and then made the extra point. The Glads dug
in deep and fought hard. In the fourth quarter, Cheyenne scored again, but was unable to make the extra point.
When the final whistle blew, the tension lifted from the field, like extreme pressure suddenly relieved. Widefield emerged victorious over it's arch rival for the second straight time.
As a result of the fine coaching, Widefield was represented on the State All-Star Team, on the All-City Team,
and on the Pikes Peak League Te m . Rusty Henninger drew a spot on the state team and selected to play on the
South Squ<~.d in the state. orth-South game . Rusty Henninger, Doug MacDonald, and Roy King all received
pl ces on the first team of the P. P. 1. Team . Rusty
Wasin er received a second team berth and Bob
Gentry, Alan MacDonald, Claude Burke, and Ed
Rodriquez recieved honorable mention. Rusty
Henninger and Doug MacDonald became the first
Widefield football players to receive recognition on
the All-City Team . They received honorable
mention.

THE C . A . FOSTER STADIUM
One of the most modern stadiums to be found in the Pike's Peak Region i Widefield's C. A. Foster Stadium.
Disigned by Carlyle Guy and covering twelve acres, it is constructed or pre -<:ast prefabricated cement, has a
seating capacity of 1, 600 and is awaiting at anytime to be expanded either up or out. Going along with the
modern theme, one sees the new Mercury Vapor lights which are employ"'d for a wide dispersal glow, capable
of illumination several yards. The spacious 100-yard playing field is fed by its own well.
Mr. Clarence A. Foster was the name designated for the new stadium. Mr. Foster has been a long term resident
of the Widefield area and a very influencial figure in school business having served on the school board for
several years. The Student Council of Widefield recommended the new stadium to be named in his honor.
Finally, during the Fountain-Widefield game on October 5, 1962, we dedicated the field .with a 20-to-nothing
victory over the Spartans.
Being extremely proud of our new stadium, we are exceptionally proud of the Gladiators, who now on their
own soil will be tough challengers to any and all competition.

Coaches Loper and Stancato investigate the early progress of the

SUMMARY "B" SQUAD SEASON
Widefield' Junior Varsity had a very fine season, winning five and losing two. After
losing the fir t two games, 6-0 to Fountain in the sea ons opener, and 18-14 to
Cheyenne, the fighting B's came back to win four straight.
Fountain, Manitou, and St. Mary' all ta ted defeat at the hands of Widefield. Probably the highpoint of the season was the 14-6 win over a very fine St. Mary' team.
Feller, the Junior Var ity' scat back, scored the winning touchdown, moving around
right end behind excellent blocking. The first touchdown was cored by Rick Sutton
who caught a punt on hi own 40 yard line and scooted all the way into the end zone
for the T .D.
It would be extremely difficult to pick any outstanding players a

each game played

wa a total team effort.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the administration for their wonderful
co-operation. And a pecial thanks to the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders who stayed

A ·olid defense, coordinated with a wift, elusive offen e re ulted in a resume of
impressive wins for the Gladiator ba ketball team. For the first team in Gladiator
history, Widefield wound up in the winner's column for ix consecutive games.
The morale boot>t came when the Gladiator met their arch rival, Cheyenne Mountain,
for the first time in leaf,TUe competition thi season.
A full house saw Cheyenne enter the game a heavy favorite, bolstered by a previous
win over the Gladiator in a non -league competition. Undaunted by the heavy odds
against them. the Gladiator were out for revenge.
The Gladiators gained pos e ~ion of the opening jump ball and drove under the basket
for two points. Cheyenne returned the ball, but ran into trouble in their home court
and lost the ball. The Gladiators drove the length of the floor for another two points.
Cheyenne returned the ball and this time cored. Cheyenne tried in vain to overcome
the Gladiator lead, but the fired up Gladiators were too much for them. The half ended in favor of the Gladiators, 40-23.
The crowd erupted as both teams hit the floor for the econd half. Throughout the
third quarter the Gladiators held Cheyenne scorele s and increased their own lead by
ten pomt . The fourth quarter
found Cheyenne loosing spirit fast,
but Cheyenne rallied in a la t desperate attempt to beat the Gladiators and succeeded in narrowing
the Gladiator lead by a considerable
margin. Aware that the game wa
being snatched from them, the
Gladiators smashed the Cheyenne
rally and ran up their own core.

Another Widefield fir t came when Widefield was awarded the League Sportsmanship

At the close of the ea ·on, Widefield again was represented on the All League Team
with Ru ty Wa inger drawing a first team spot and Eddie Rodriquez, Chuck Mangum,
and Mick Reiher drawing honorable mentions.

Inexperience was the tory told over and over throughout the 1962-63 wrestling season, losing several matches by only a few points. The team showed good overall
strength by winningthe "0 and B: Invitational Tournament, The team finishes with
only two firsts, but eight seconds and three thirds, with everyone scoring tournament points.
The district tournament proved to be somewhat of a di appointment with the team
scoring only one second and one third.
The possibilities for next year look good with the loss of only one senior.

I
HAVE YOU SEEN THE GENTLEMAN AROUND WHS? WELL, HE IS HERE AND ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT REVEAL HIS IDENTITY U TIL AT LEAST 650 OF THE 1963
SPARTACUS HAVE BEE SOLD!!
This is the way the idea of Mr. X was introduced at the beginning of the year. Pick ing a suitable person for th1s position was not at all an easy job, but the yearbook
staff, after due consideration, finally arnved at a decision. The end result proved
to be a Widefield High School favorite , CHUCK MANGUM. Chu k starred in varsity football in wh1ch he played quarterback, and A -Squad ba ketball in whi h he
stood the forward spot. One of the qualities chosen by the staff was tudent citizen ship. No one better exemplifies this than Chuck. Chuck's chard.ctensucs make
him not only a leader , but a friend and a typical all around tudent.

POPULARITY POLL

Seventy-six seniors determined their favorites in the popularity poll. Judgement was
based solely on the integrity of the ::;tudents. The re::;ults proved satisfactory according to both the faculty and student body.
For five years Widefield has had the reputation of maintaining an honest, clean, and
sportsworthy attitude. This includes all activities, m school and out. More opponents
leave our field with the satisfaction and knowledge that a friendly invitation and fair
play are dominate characteristics here, no matter what the contest, whether it be
football or chess. The oppo~ing team or individual has never been evaluated on hi~
or her race or school origin.
The student is the only ambassador to any school. All immediate opinions are based
on his Impressions. We believe that Widefield best exemplifies the ideal school.
ot all receive the honor of being voted on the popularity poll. These are only the
chosen few of Widefield's representatwn. Truth and honesty are prime factors in
one's personal popularity poll. ThiS can be readily seen m the manner m whlch a
WHS student will conduct himself, not only to visitors, but to his fellow students as
well. We now scope ......... .
