Like a Bird of Prey
Sometimes, during these quiet months
When ounds become muted;
And the hush descends upon the mountains,
I begin by hearing its soft voice.
Swelling in moving disquiet.
the aurora of colors commence to change,
The softness increases day by day.
Until after a while no splendid colors remain.
And like a wary bird of prey,
On the brink of the hunt.
For as suddenly as he sees his quarry,
He dives like a missile.
o sooner there, then gone.

Homecoming a -h it
unity makes it work

Marred only by cold weather, WHS 1974 Homecoming
festivities were greeted with active participation. After some
suspense, Jody St. Germaine was crowned during the royalty as embly. Activities ranged from a full-house attendance at the movie "Bless the Beasts and the Children," to
the long anticipated dance. During the week, seniors were
victorious over JUniors m the powder puff game. Thursday
evening marked the first pep rally bon-fire since 1966
which ignited sp1rit for the Glad's hard earned 6-0 victory
over Pueblo Centenmal.

Jody t. Germaine was crowned homecoming queen at the royalty assembly, Sept.
24, 19 4. Mike akayama crowned Jody after walking back and forth in front of
the candidates several times. After the suspenseful moment was over everyone
seemed pleased with our new 1974-1975 homecoming queen:

Homecoming festivities featured a
chariot race thi year. It was a hard
earned victory for HS, battling it out
during half-time of the game.

W'dS attended by a host of spectators. With a rare combination
of coaches Danny Weber. Dave

played a number of trick plays.
Most outstanding of these plays
was the surprise element, using
two consecutive play without
going into a huddle. By using
this plan of attack, seniors slipped by unsuspecting juniors to
break the 6-6 tie at the beginning of the final quarter. Jucy

Sophomore Julie Jones heads for the last tum, as she competes in the 100 yard breast stroke. Coach Holm will be
looking for a more experienced team next year, as this
year's team was composed of many Sophomores.

Dolly Iverson is shown above demonstrating her diving form.
She placed 8th in the district meet, which was held at the
Municipool. Nine area teams competed in the meet.

Ava Edmunds pushes off the wall, as she takes the
first tum in the 100 yard backstroke. With a winning time of 1:15.0, she qualified for state competition, being the only one to represent the
Glads this year. The city meet found Ava placing
an impressive 3rd. At district, the Glad relay
teams did well, as the medley relay placed 6th
and the free relay took 7th. Closing out the season, the team came home finishing in 7th place,
defeating Harrison and Lewis-Palmer.

Widefield cross country, coach Mike

season in one word, "excellent".
He had good reason as the Glads
capped the most successful season
m WHS cross country history by
ranking in the top five, finishing
third in the rugged SCL and placing
filth in the state meet. The duo of
Junior Rand)' Rhule and Senior
Bill Payne paced Widefield all year
as both runners broke WHS' two

Payne set a new mark at 9:40 at

The Dead of Winter
Snow is falling in swirling flurries,
I can feel its frosty bite.
The skies are filled with its splendor,
In colors of gray and white.
As I stand watching the ceaseless patterns,
It falls upon the waiting, lifeless ground.
Thus, winter is upon us
In all its eerie quiet,
And the snow is a continuous blanket
Silencing the ground,
Until the sun melts all traces
Of that wet, bitter blanket,
Wi.ll earth's springy fingers be able to
At last, clutch its tattered gown.
So again, shall life renew,
Its ever pulsating cycle
Of live and die,
And the changing of colors
From green to gray and white.

Varsity Coach, Stan Nelson, started the year with only eight returning lettermen
and only one of those had qualified for state the year before. The team was made
up of 18 seniors and seven lettermen, 20 juniors and one letterman, and 28 sophomores. They all worked hard at the start of the season and were rewarded with a
win in their first match, only to be crushed the following night in Denver. Then
their league duals began and by Christmas break they had compiled a two and zero
league record and an overall four and one. After the break the Glads took fourth
place in the Bear Creek Tourney with Dan Seaney taking a first. League matches
started again and they lost a close one, but then came back to win four in a row to
up their league record to six and one, and overall record of eight and two. Arvada
West tourney produced another fourth place for the Widefield grapplers as Dan
Seaney again took first and other wrestlers gained four second places, one third
place, and one fourth. Then in a league championship match against defending state
champion, Wasson, the gladiators led by 30-14 with only three matches left, but
Wa son came back to pin the last three wrestlers and take a 32-30 win and the championship. The team finished second in league with an eight and two league record
and overall ten and three and one. The Glads then went on to beat out Wasson at
District to walk away with the first place trophy. Steve Sigala was second, at 98
lbs., brother Joe Sigala won the 105 championship. Dan Seaney won the 112 championship, his brother Dave won the thrid place medal at 132lbs. Dean Chacon won
the 145 lbs. championship. Don Martin was third at 185 lbs. and Tim Holmes was
second at hwt. The following weekend, the state qualifiers, Joe Sigala, Dan Seaney,
and Dean Chacon traveled to Denver to score four points before losing but in the
semifinals and consolation rou'nds.

A fast breakmg Widefield basketball
team endured Its problems during
1975 as coach Larry Furda's cagers
crambled from behind in the SCL
standings in hopes of gaining a league
play-off berth and a possible trip to
the state tourney.
The losses of three top notch players
in early sea on, incon istency, and
lady luck blocked the way for immediate Gladiator success. Finesse and
Widefield's running game cau ed fits
for the Glads usually taller opponents.
Furda's crew gained respect for this
type of play.
(The final three cage cores are ommited due to an early March deadline.)

Widefield continued the
tradition of having winning junior varsity and
sophomore basketball
teams during 1975.
These programs build a
foundation for future
Gladiator teams at the
varsity level. The J .V 's
well-balanced attack
and aggressive defense
elevated coach Terry
Kashner's squad to one
of the better cage units
in the SCL at J.V. level.
The Sophomores, under
first year mentor Pat
Salt, took fourth place
honors in the sophomore tournament.
(The final three cage
scores are omitted due

Huddled not together, but apart
And yet bonded

President of the enior class is Sam
Walker. To the right is Wayne Bullock,

Tlus is the first year that the senior
council has started a fund for a scholarship. They have had a few money
making projects to supply this fund.
The council hopes they will be able to
make enough money and leave some

going. All the seniors were able for the
scholarship except those who were on
the senior council.
The senior council also helped to assist fellow seniors with picking the
graduation colors, motto and flowers

DIVISION
Students Who Travel
Among us, we have here,
Students who travel,
From here to there.
They bolster the team
By handing them spirit,
And building up steam.
So, through out the year,
They attend all events;
Supporting through cheers.

Newspaper
makes changes
at Widefield

First semester photographer, Ed Mar h helps reporter Craig Porter
with lay-out.

"This year's goal for the paper was to improve the over all
quality of the paper", stated Russell Krause, editor. The
addition of in-depth studies conducted by the staff was one
ofmany contributions to this year's 1974-75 newspaper.
When asked about the change from short paper to long paper, Krause replied, "We felt it would add to the paper's
appearance, and gives us more room." The reason behind
the switch from our graphic arts to the Security Advertiser
for the printing of the paper was to reheve some of the
pressure on Graphtc Arts. Because of much critism caused
by last year's name Acta Diurna, the staff changed the
name to Oracle, to create an easier understanding. In a final
statement, Krause said, "I still see a need for more changes.
I think the progress made by the staff is a compliment to
their hard work and new ideas."

using experimentation as a guide these
questions were answered. The entire staff

Student Organization for Change was
formed this year for the students. This
organization would give the students a
chance to voice their opinions on changes
they feel would benefit the school. The
students with suggestions were required
to complete a specified form and place
them in the various boxes within the
school. If the committee accepted the
suggestion , the student was notified that
his suggestion was valid. Within a month
the student wa notified on the action he
had suggested and the results of that
action . S.O.C . dealt with numerous suggestions throughout the year. Among
these were the placement of students in
honor level cia srooms, investigating the
lack and replacement of texts in the history and chemistry courses.

Forensics is. • •
Forensics is not only a competitive high school activity, it is a
foundation upon which to build a future. Being able to think
quickly and to ay what is to be said with confidence and style
are valuable assets attained through Forensics. Long hours of
practice and research, flling systems and indexing, and mountains of rework fill the leisure time of the team member. It requires determination. The rewards are confidence and pride in
self and an awareness of current social, economic, and political
problems. Forensics provides for the development of the
speaking voice and the formulation, organization, and development of ideas. This year the team attended numerous tournaments. The season began at Mitchell and the team steadily improved on other tournament dates. Widefield hosted two
tournaments this year. The Invitational on ovember 4 and
the All City Tournament on February 15. The year terminated
with the state tournament in Boulder. Forensics encompasses
many areas; among these are interpretation of humor, poetry,
drama, original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, and cross
examination and Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Constructive critici rn is the tool u ed by coach Joe eph Dionisio to Instill self confidence in team members and to achieve perfection. Demonstrating technique and sugge ting alterations on elections all lead the
team to success.

students for future
Through work and study, Widefield High students participated in Vocational Club of America and gained the experience to become skilled workers in our future ociety.
Electronics, carpentry, and auto mechamcs are just a few of
the many various fields being taken. Scholarships awarded
by General Motors, provide competition on the state and
national level. Virgil Shwartz, sponsor, stated that a majority of the students in VICA are trained for auto mechanics. Although other fields are open in the club, student
interest is focused in this area. The club is beneficial to the
students for means of experience when looking for a job.

A true friend leaves no doubts

A friend whom you have been enjoying during your whole life,
you ought not to be displeased with in
a moment.
A stone is many years becoming a
ruby; take care that you do not destroy it in an instant against another
stone.

We did Rate
It started in the summer,
With just a few in sight.
We thought it was a bummer,
Till we saw the light.
We had to fill these ads,
To make our book look great.
So we started in on Dads,
And with some, we did rate.
Thus, in the following pages,
You will soon desire.
The fruit of our rages,
A total of our fire.
