The couple that should have been ...
Srs. Jazmeen Powell and Marvin
Jackson actually used to be a couple,
and it was because of the1r supposed
tumultuous on-again, off-again
relationship that their senior class
voted them "Should Have Been a
Couple." Even their closest friends
thought it would be pretty funny to
vote lor them "Marvin was in h1s
Drakes lor the longest once he found
out that Jazmeen and Aaron had such
a strong thing going, so I thought it
would be funny to see him sulking
around the school again," laughed Sr
John Karlos Logan .
"! knew it would be funny," agreed
Sr Zachary Metcalf . "They were
together a couple of times on and off,
and we had to hear about it all the
time. When he heard they won, it
was the funniest thing!"
John Karlos and Zach laughed
saying, "Marv1n's our boy, and he's
bound to lind someone better in life,
maybe ."
It wasn't just the guys that thought
it would be funny to vote for the
former couple. Srs. Ashley Bangura
and Larisa Kelley thought it would be
good lor a laugh too . ''When the
idea came up, I thought it would be
funny because Marvin's so cocky,
and it's funny to see him taken down
a notch. He acts all, "! don't care about girls,' and 'look at all the girls I got,' but he didn't get Jazmeen," Ashley smiled .
Lansa revealed, 'We had to get back at Marvm for what he put us through alter they broke up . It wasn't a bad break up, but he turned it into one
for their friends . He wouldn't let people say the "J" word or he would stop being their friend."
The word spread quickly around the senior class about the joke, and the two were voted lor by a landslide . Even those who weren't extremely close
to the couple voted lor them. Sr. Dylan Eaton said, "I knew they dated Marvin was in my study hall class, and we talked about them dating, so I
thought it would be funny to vote lor the two of them when I head about it "
So, how do the former couple feel about the vote? They took it in stride. Both laughed and had off-the-cuff comments. Marvin said, "I
don't know, I guess I'm just into older women ... " while laughing and enjoying the company of Srs. Cynthia Johnson and Janiya Landers.
Jazmeen is now dating Sr. Aaron Quarles and laughed, "I love being chased, but only by those who can keep up. To be truthfully
honest, it just wasn't meant to be."

GAME OF THE WEEK
The Grizzlies started out this
year in the spotlight. On August
29th, Mesa Ridge football was
chosen to be KOM's Game of
the Week for our home game
against the Canon City Tigers .
The boys were pumped that the
football program was being show
cased to start off their season . "It
was a humbling experience,"
explained Jr Nic Braaten.
Not only was the football team
put into the spotlight, but the
cheerleaders were as well. "It
was nice to have Cheerleading
recognized along with football.
It was a lot of fun, and our stunts
were better then they usually are .
Our routine went perfectly,"
smiled Captain Sr Cynthia
Johnson
However, what is a team
without its fans? So many people
showed up early in the morning
to support their fellow Grizzly
team . "A lot more people showed
up than I thought would. It was
awesome being there so early

0
with so much support,"
expressed Sr Janiya Landers.
Not just football players and
cheerleaders showed up that
morning . ROTC had a good
showing, and so did the girls'
volleyball team . The Pride of
Mesa Ridge (our band) also put
up some numbers that morning .
Ouite a few staff members
showed up, like Ms. Bird, Mr.
Williams, and Ms. Jungling,
and a lot more students came
just to support and rubberneck
the news crew.
Soph Bailey Norman was
among the many students who
woke up early for this exciting
event, "I got there early not on!
to support, but also to represent
Mesa Ridge band." A huge
part of the Grizzly family was
put into the spotlight for all to
see at 5:30 a .m ., and we were
looking good .

he week of Homecoming is a week
that students eagerly await each year - Five days of showing school pride by
dressing up for spirit days followed by a
Friday night football game under the lights.
Saturday night, Sophomore Council hosts
the annual Homecoming Dance.

Like every year, the seniors were clearly
the most enthusiastic of all the classes. On
the day of the assembly, the senior class
was a black, enthusiastic mass of energy
They came armed with streamers and
decorated in face paint. "We like winning
and being at the top as seniors. It fuels our

energy," Srs. Kylie Shelton and Samantha

Sophomore Christian Esparza loved spirit
week. "It was a way to be different and
show school spirit. It was really fun," he
remarked .
For the first time in a while, Mesa Ridge
allowed freshmen, sophomores, and juniors
to run for Homecoming Court. "I thought
other classes being able to run for
Homecoming Court this year was cool,"
Soph Mina Day commented. "It lets
everyone be a part of the school this way."
Spirit Week is a great way to get
pumped up for the Friday night football
game. The day that students participated
in the most for this spirit week was the
Jersey Day on Monday. Hundreds of
students showed up decked out in their
favorite jerseys. Semor Destiny Bishop is a
huge Raiders fan, so she wore a Raiders
jersey that day. "That's my teaml" she

September 21st through October
11th was a busy time at Mesa Ridge.
The annual Widefield vs. Mesa game
took place on Saturday, October 4th at
C.A Foster Stadium, and before that,
the Community Parade kicked off at
10 30 a m The weather is always a
queslion mark, but this year, 1t was on
point "It was warm, which was nice .
Last year was kmd of chilly, but the
sun was out, but this year was

beautiful," said Jr !sa Cruz
Honor Society, AV I D., the Rowdy
Crowd, Cheer, and Rachel's Challenge
all participated in the Commumty
Parade, and it was a good showing
from Mesa .
As members of an involved
commumty, Mesa Ridge's National
Honor Society has pnorilized their
involvement for the 2014-15 school
year "We are doing something special
by committing ourselves to service
projects, school events and
representing our organization in a
professional manner," Sr. Estrella
Gonzalez said. Gonzalez is this year's
National Honor Society President, and
has really taken the program to a
whole new level.
"Our goal this year was to do
something that left our mark on the
school, something that we would be

remembered for," explained Sr. Zach
Jac ion This idea became reality on
September 20th, when members of
NHS planted two Aspen trees in the
courtyard in honor of all the fallen
heroes of the September 11th attacks.
HS partnered with the Travis
Manion Foundation, an organization
that puts together service projects in
honor of fallen soldiers, for this event.
"Since we are a military community,
we felt that doing this in honor of
those lost in 9/ 11 was a good way to
keep their memory alive," said Jr. Lane
Brown Mesa's NHS has adopted the
motto, "If not me then who<'"
signifying the group's drive to make a
difference within both the school and
the community. The Aspen trees will
forever serve as both a reminder of the
events of that fateful day m 2001 and
as a symbol of this group's dedication
and service to our community.

October and November were very busy
months at Mesa Ridge. October kicked off
with the annual military inspection of our
NJROTC . Our cadets passed the inspection
with flying colors, with several earning
perfect scores. Along with the outstanding
number of perfect scores, they were also
awarded the Bravo Zulu Ribbon. The Bravo
Zulu is a naval signal that usually means
"well done." Out of the western United
States, only two schools are selected to
represent the Area 13 manager at nationals,
and Mesa Ridge was selected as one of
those two schools. This added to an
illustrious tradition of representation from
our regional area at nationals for the
Grizzlies. JROTC will be heading to New
Mexico in December to represent Mesa at
the Area 9 regional.

YOU GO, WE GO
The Varsity football team
operated under the slogan, "You
Go, We Go," this season . "It was
somethmg that Coach Braaten
brought to us before the season
He had the idea that it would
help to bring us closer as a
team," said Sr Zach Metcalf
~[JII-fllfii.,.'f-- The team adopted this creed as
its own, and even though it
might not have had the impact
Coach Braaten wanted, it
definitely helped to bring the
team together.
"The future is bright," added
Coach Braaten. 'We just have
to see what next year has in

When many of these players
look back at the season, they
look back with a specific game

Jonathan, who was also the N

She was happy to be

Sr. Alyssa Stangel
was pleased with
her season . She
was excited
because Mesa got
its first League win
in Mesa history. "I

the team ... I am
going to miss the
sophomores," she

Sr. Jordan

last season playing
for Mesa . She
loved the family
aspect of this year.
"We won League,
11-3, and had a
really good
season," Jordan
said. "It is a good
year to go out."

Soph . Jessica Scott
locks her eyes on

towards her on the

In an amazing League game

The amazing play of the day

March Madness (Above) The annual NCAA Men's
Basketball Tournament hit Mesa in full force this year. "March
Madness is an exciting time of the year for both students and
teachers! It's a great way to connect the tournament and the
principles of bracketology to the properties of the periodic
table of elements. I've done my research and have the elElmE~ml
Bromine taking the crown this year," explained M Tl
'1 . .

"Senioritis" began to hit harder than ever after
Valentine's Day, and the thought of graduation
being just around the corner did not help their
cause . When asked how Senioritis was affecting
her, Sr Tiarra Allen re
, "! could make a list
on how bad it's affecting me, but all I want to
do is kick my feet up and eat pudding and
watch Netflix on my phone 24/ 7." That's what
Senionhs does to an otherwise motivated senior.
Meanwhile, the other three classes were
introduced to the CMAS testing . This was the
first year that the new test was implemented and
it was met with varying opinions . "Personally, I
didn't like it. I feel as though all it did was
streflectedt instead of really helping us," said
So1 l

Others liked how it was
rolled out. Instead of having to take full days of
testing, students simply had 60-90 minute
sessions once per day for six days.
A new season also meant the start of Mesa's
spring sports, but things did not go quite as
expected . On February 23, the first day of
Spring Sports practice, there was a huge snow
storm that actually resulted in a snow day, a
rarity for the students of District 3. The different
sports teams were forced to lind different ways
to practice for the first two weeks of their
season, as the fields and courts were covered in
snow and could not be used . 'We could not get
outside at all, it was really frustrating, but it was
also fun because we had to improvise for
practice inside. We even hit tennis balls down

the hallway!" explained Sr Katie Wood , a
tennis captain.
As March rolled around, the "hot talk"
around the school centered around the
events that took place on March 16 Towards
the end of Advisory, the fire alarm went off,
and the students assumed that it was just a
routine drill About twenty minutes later, the
Fountain Fire Department arrived and it was
revealed that this was the real deal.
Someone had lit a fire in the boy's
bathroom, and the complications from this
effectively shut down the southern portion of
the second floor of the school for the day
"Honestly, it was pretty nice. We got out of
most of third block, and I got to get some
sun," reflected Jr Apnl Eldndge. It was 72
degrees and sunny that day.
Others just complained "! would have
been okay with it, but I got sunburned over
the weekend, and was getting re-sunburned

air and hope for summer that is just around
the corner

A little bit of rain starts to fall . The animals begin to smell the earth
melting. Things begin to get a little rowdy around the farm. THEY can
sense that freedom is just around the corner. 'What do we do to keep
the sheep at bay? They sense they will be soon released to the the Big
Pasture, and there is nothing that we can do. Do you think they know
that we really never had any authority to begin with?" one farmer asked
another.
"Nah," replied one of the head farmers . "The sheep have no idea. We
can keep them in line, and they will never step out until we release
them."
And so it went. Every year the farmers were pushed to keep the
sheep in line, and the sheep never fought for their rights.

The Lady Gnzzlies practically lived
at the free throw line this season.
As a team, they shot 275 foul shots
over a 24 game span . And not only
did they get to the line, they made
it count. As a team, the Lady
Grizzlies shot 61% from the line, the
best in the Metro League and a
very respectable percentage overall.
"Free throws win games . When you
get to the line, you need to make it

state.
The only freshman to make it to
state was Fr. Dominick Fini who

A long but fulfilling
year filled with
many awards
Mesa Ridge's JROTC has had an
extremely eventful year Events that cadets
parhcipated in range from Simple community
events such as parades to competitions in other
states and even having their own Navy Ball.
The JROTC organization takes great pride
in how many community events they
participate m and how they give back to the
community
Early in the year Mesa R1dge was visited by
the NJROTC's Area Manager, Captain
Wenceslao . He came down to perform the
annual m1htary inspection lor this unit. This
was an extremely big event, so cadets were
being trained from day one. Thanks to great
instructors and outstanding leaders, the unit
did impeccably and were even awarded the
Bravo Zulu award from the captain "AM.!. took
a lot of preparahon, but I think JROTC really
pulled through lor Captain W. We really
showed how Mesa Ridge does it, and what

we're all about. After he saw our teams, he
invited us to ationals and even donated
$10,000 lor us to go to ationals m Florida,"
said Sr. John Lightner
Perhaps the most stressful time lor the cadets
and instructors was preparing lor compehtion
in ew Mexico. Mesa Ridge's JROTC was
invited to attend an Area 9 Regional
competition. Mesa stepped up to the challenge
and began training their drill teams, physical
fitness teams, their academic teams, and their
inspection team Only being permitted to
bring 40 students, cadets had to compete with
each other to be on each team. A lot was
demanded from every cadet who wished to
compete with the NJROTC, such as to maintain
their grades, attending practices, being on
multiple teams, and much more.
Many of the dedicated cadets were willing to
go the extra mile to be on the armed or
unarmed exhibition teams. To be able to even

Early Practice While in New Mexico, the NJROTC
cadets did not have time to sleep-in, especially on the day
of competihon . They awoke bnght and early, and the
cadets were rushed to West Mesa High School to get a little
extra practice in prior to actual competition Drill teams
and inspection teams had little time to prepare prior to
competing, but they had used what little time they had
been given well and put in quality work.

be considered lor these teams, students had to
arnve an hour earlier than school even began .
Cadets came in at least twice a week to be at
school by 6 :00 a .m. to practice lor these teams
All this lead up to a single day lor a single
competitor.
Mesa Ridge placed 4th over all against 12
different schools, and placed differently in
every event. Perhaps the most impressive victory
Mesa had was placing 1st in Inspection, which
was worth the most points and was arguably
the most difficult Sophomore Sasha Mires
competed on the unarmed exhibition team .
When asked what her most memorable part
was, she laughed, "The most memorable part of
the year was when Jr Kate Achen, our Drill
Team Commander, lost her shoe during
compehtion!"

-

Four Person Teams Mesa Ridge
submitted two color guard teams while competing
in ew Mexico. Both the male (top picture) and
the female teams (right) did extremely well;
however, the females were able to outshine the
males and beat them by JUSt a single point. "Being
a color guard captain in competition is exciting
and nerve-wracking With months of preparation
during competition, it's over in maybe 10-15
minutes! I look forward to other competitions with
my color guard team," said Jr Kaitlyn Achen .

JR{"\:c IS
A GREAT

Earning Recognition It was an
extreme honor for Mesa's NJROTC to be
visited by their Area Manager. The Area 13
manager has not been able to come down to
Colorado for the past couple of years, but
after seeing what an outstanding unit Mesa
has to offer, he plans to make his visits much
more often and says we should be expecting
him every other year. Not only was it a honor
for Mesa to have a captain visit, but some
cadets that had outstanding military bering,
knowledge, and a perfect uniform were
awarded medals .

have morphed into a form of
self-expression filled with
colors, shapes and shades .
Each person at Mesa who has
a tattoo has a reason for it.
Whether it's "just because" or

that there is a deeper reason
behind it, everyone has his/
her own story, and a tattoo is
just one way to share it.
When deciding WHAT
tattoo to get, there is also the
decision of WHERE to get
the tattoo . Many people get
their tattoos in different
places because of the
meaning of them . Some get
them over their hearts
because they lose someone
they love. Some get them
where they can see them
every day as a reminder to

themselves .
Semor Rakey1a Banks ( 1)
got a matching tattoo with
her mom since they have a
good relationship . It says,
"As long as I'm living ... with
an eternity symbol under it,"
explained Banks.
Sr Megan Morgan's (2)
tattoo represents the outdoors
and how she loves to go
hunting fishing and do
anything outside .
Sr Kv1a Cornett (3) got her
tattoo in memory of one of
her friends who died in a car

THE MESl RIDGE TRACK TEUM IS liMING TO BE BITTER THlN EVER BEFORE, AND THEY HlVE
PUT I lLL THE HlRD WORK NECESSlRY TO SEND l GOOD PORTION OF THEIR TEAM TO COMPJ.TI FOR
STlTE TITLES IN THEIR RESPECTIVE EVENTS.
Track is a very special sport, for it
allows you to not only compete as
an individual, but be a part of a
team as well This 1dea of "team" is
what the coaches of Mesa Ridge
Track and Field preach to their
athletes on a daily bas1s . "They
have to believe in one another and
have the confidence to trust one
another," said Coach Burgess,''If
they were unable to support one
another, then this team would not
be successful." Luckily lor Coach

Burgess, the team definitely
believes in one another "There is a
great atmosphere at practices and
meets . It feels like we are more like
a fam1liy than a team ." explained
Jr. Ricky Shegog. Mesa Ridge is
poised to have a very successful
track season, following last year
where they were able to send a
good portion of their team to
compete at state The team is also
blessed with some great leadership

from its seniors . Srs. Kahlil
James, Paxton Richardson,
Karlos Logan, Sariya Williams,
Bryan Bito and Willie Stewart all
come to practice ready and
willing to make themselves
better. "The mindset should be
to perform like you're at State
each and every day," said
Richardson, "if you don't have
that mentality then you are not
trying to compete at a high

level." This kind of leadership has
helped spark a kind of competitive
ferocity that has many of Mesa's
track athletes hungry for
competition."Every week I
constantly can't wait for Saturdays,
" said Soph Dawson Stewart, "I
can't wait lor those golden
opportunities to go out and show
everyone what I've got "

(Left) Srs Karlos Logan, Kahlll James, Bryan Bito and Jr
Giovanm Jackson all started preparing lor this season back in October. They
tramed lor countless hours to be able to perform to the best of their abilities this

competitive. Our coaches expect nothmg less than 11096 and that's what we give
them every day" said Jackson

season, as he looks to perform to the best of his abihty in order to get to the

Practice Makes Perfect (Above}
The Mesa Ridge Track Team works
hard each and every day in practice,
sometimes in adverse conditions, in
order to achieve their goals . "As a
team, our goal each day is to be
better than we were yesterday," said
Jr Jarin Donaldson, "Nobody's
perfect, but we try to be."

"You
either get
better or
you get
worse.
You can't
have it
both
ways ."

Just a Bop, Skip, and a Jump
(Left ) The Mesa Ridge Track Team
takes every precaution necessary to
ensure that no athlete gets hurt
during practice . " Injuries set not only
the individual back, but it can set
the team back as well,' said Fr.

why our coaches and trainers take
such good care of us and try to keep
us from getting hurt."

thoughts and memories race
through our minds of the last 18
years . A constant struggle to want
to step back in time and relish
those precious moments that
seemed to pass so quickly.
