IUJorki11fJ out the ridges to make a better school
This year the staff and students at Mesa Ridge High School
are working to make this establishment work more smoothly.
One step in that direction was the new access period. This
was implemented to help the students who have frequent
absences or who just need a little extra help. Access period
is fifteen minutes long and the students wishing to participate
in this must obtain a pass from the teacher that they want to
see. The computers have internet access and can be used to
help people out in their research endeavors. There are several
labs around the school and in the media center. One of the
more noticeable changes is that of a new class: the Seniors.
They will be the first graduating class. There are some new
faces this year in the teaching staff. Student teachers from
various colleges in the area also are joining us as part of their
learning experience. These teachers assist their assigned
teacher in class work as well as conduct ton their own. The
teachers are gaining valuable teaching experience from this.
While it was hard to adjust to a new school, the staff and
students are definitely making this school better for everybody in attendance.

There are many new faces to our staff
this year. Mrs. Levka Craft student
teaches English for a semester for
Mrs. Linda Schwartz. She is gaining
experience in her teaching field.

"See You at the Pole" is a national event that was started in Texas and has become a nationwide event. This is the second
year that Mesa Ridge students have participated in this gathering.

2

The A.P. Biology students went camping and part of their agenda was to canoe
across a lake and perform various tests on the water. Mr. Dave Overlin is shown
here giving some last minute advice to the students before they sail out across
the waters.

Benjamin Walther-Frank warms up
before cross-country practice. He is
an exchange student from Germany.
He is experiencing a whole different
way of learning.

Monica Gomez and Jacob Ainsworth stand together in
front of the Drama room after finishing class.

Steffeni Birchfield and Brandon Perry make use of the
computers in the library.

3

Over the summer, Jessica Perez, Kim Mouriquand, Jennifer Green
went to camp to get a head start on this year's book. This helped to get
the year off to a smooth start.

Canoeing at Manitou Lake was a new experience for almost all of the
A. P. Biology students. Anna Rancourt leads the way while Erin Stewart
and Katy Vernier paddle and steer.

4

One way to get the students involved is to sit at lunch and advertise. Jennifer Skeen demostrates
this by telling the students about
pies she's selling.

The student body at Mesa Ridge has nearly doubled since last year.
Before the last class, students are making their way to class through the
crowded halllways.

During the access period , implemented to help out students, is
used by Mandy Taylor who rushes
to her access teacher's class.

Richard Fiorillo and Marshawn Halterman stay after school one day to
work on scenery for their play "Eveything You Wanted To Know About
Shakespeare But Were Afraid To Ask". They spend extra hours to make
their production a worthwhile experience.
The construction crew worked on the various fields so that the athletes
and band members could play and practice at the home field. This is the
newly finished varsity soccer field that also doubles as the junior varsity
football field .

Love, trust, and respect
bind us together with bonds of
friendships. Our friends are
our foundation and support
throughout our lives. Your real
friends are the people with
whom you share the secrets
of your heart. They are the
people you laugh with, cry
with, and when something is
wrong they always seem to
find a way to cheer you up.
Real friends are the ones that
can watch you make a fool of
yourself, and you know that
no matter what has happened
they are still there for you. So,
tell your friends how much
they mean to you. You never
know when it might be too
late.
"Alone I dare not climb ... but
with you I reach new heights."
-Josh Ainsworth Stephanie Fletcher and Rene Lumbard demonstrate how laughter can
be the shortest distance between two people.
"The smile on your face brings a
smile to my heart," said Jeff Thomas in response to how he feels
about Jessica Krause.

6

Susanne Meyer, Teena Slack, Andrea Stone, Monica Jones, and
Willie Mersinger show how close
friends can really be.

11 friend's wish
May your spirit keep the
freedom or a butterfly in
spring. And your heart be
filled always with the joys of
simple things. May your essence claim the freshness of
the new laid morning dew.
All of this ... and more ... is the
love of a friend's wish for
you.

'The special things

"Among the people I love they all
make me laugh." This perfectly defines Alena Watters and Pam
Hughes.

It's the special things in life
that make it mean so much.
The friends, the love, the
thoughts, the touch. If we let
these precious things float
out to endless sea, we lose
our hope, our love, and all
reasons to be.

'Takin' lAp 'Time With Outside Sports
Outside sports at Mesa
Ridge is growing in popularity.
These sports have grown a lot
in the past year. Most people
do these sports for fun or to
express themselves. Some
people get hurt doing outside
sports, but they love doing it
and they never give up.
These sports may be unusual
to others , but not these
people. These certain sports
are a good opportunity to
show your courage and wits.
Strapping on his snowboard ,
Jeremiah Ward prepares to take a
ride down the Rocky Mountains.

Taking a breath and going for it all, Chris Todd practices to be the
absolute best.
Mr. Glen Pervis is a nation-wide softball player. He has been playing for
a number of years now. He is seen here playing catcher in one of his
tournaments.

8

Ms. Laura Graglia makes this extreme sport, rock climbing, look as if it
were easy, but you need to practice to be good at this. Compared to the
pros, Ms. Laura Graglia shows that the Garden of the Gods is a piece
of cake to climb up to the top.
Danny Moberly takes a very high risk move off a railing on his skateboard.
He skateboards on his free time, it is one of his favorite hobbies.

Alan Carter shows that he's all that
in Joe Gentry's Track Troop during
the summer. Alan participates in
this all-state track team. The team
travels all over the country and
Alan is one the team's toughest
sprint-runners. As most people
may know, Alan runs for Mesa
Ridge and plays a big part in making our track team a success.

While Nicole Clemings is diligently working at
Wendy's fast food restaurant, she has just
enough time for a quick snap shot.

To some teenagers school is practically their life,
but to a lot of Mesa Ridge students, a job is part of that
life too. Waking up, getting ready for school, spending
from 7:30 in the morning to 2:48 in the afternoon in
school, then going to a job usually from 3:30 to 9:00p.m.
is exhausting! Yet many students have this for a regular
routine.
Students work at various places including
Walmart, McDonalds, Tinsletown, hardware shops,
Wendy's, and so on. Most students are working to save
up for either a car or just some extra spending money.
It has been said that a lot of the working teens spend
their pay check right when they get it and are broke for
the next two weeks. That statement has been proven to
be a fact.
Mesa Ridge students are taking on more responsibility and proving that going to school, keeping up
grades, and working is possible.

"Four of a kind!" We call them Lynda Wood, Leslie Harris, Jennifer Avalos, and Tiffany Vialpando. They are four hard
working Walmart employees standing for a pose during closing hours.

Summer
-txpertences
.
What did you do this summer? Did you sit around all
summer, or did you get up and try something new, something exciting, something fun .
Several students and staff went camping or whitewater rafting. Some took trips to France and Spain. And still
others went to camps for basketball , wrestling , yearbook,
baseball, and anything else you could possibly do over the
course of the summer.
"We really had a great time in France," said Jennifer
Schmitt. "There was so much to see and do. We were sorry
we had to come back so soon."

Spending time at Lake Powell , Tacey Williams tries to avoid being
tipped over into the cold water.
On a summer trip to Spain , Levi Newman, Nathan Gann, Elizabeth Villarreal , Jessica Segura, and Shannon Hoffmann took
advantage of a photo opportunity.

12

The summer wasn't all fun and games for everybody. Ricky Matias
and Reba Cupp attended Leadership Academy at Great Lakes Naval
Station.
While four wheeling on Engineer Pass Amanda Hutchison and her
family step outside to stretch their legs and take pictures.

Vacationing in Montana, Mrs. Linda Overlin and her husband
followed the path of Lewis and Clark down the Missouri River.
While on a trip to France, Kim Sirois and Jennifer Schmitt met two
girls from Idaho.

13

Coming Home to a J3us0 Week
Let's face it. We're teenagers, and the
one thing we try to do as often as we can is
make lots of noise, right? Well, there's no
better time to get noisy than during Spirit Week.
And guess what? We accomplished it!
Throughout our Spirit Week, we had the
ability to do things we normally wouldn't do.
Most of us would not wear our PJ's to school or
dress up as a Greek god, but this week we got
the opportunity and figured, "Why not?".
The fun didn't stop there either. We
heated things up with a car smash and a
bonfire on Friday night. The marching band
accompanied the event with fight music.
Somehow, this always manages to lift up our
school spirit.
Early Saturday morning was our Coming
Home parade. Even though it was cold and
kind of damp, we never let it bring down our
spirits. Later on that day the crowd and
marching band cheered on the Mesa Ridge
football team, hoping for a victory. The team
did their best but still lost to Cheyenne Mt. High
School28 to 13. After such a long day and with
the loss of our game, you would have thought
students were ready for bed. Well, that wasn't
the case! Most students kept their energy
intense and topped the day off with the Coming
Home dance later that night.
Lori Decker ,
Vicki Gardner,
Patricia
Schuman,
Trisha Stone,
and Becki Marsh
are all part of the
girls' volleyball
team. During the
parade , they
showed their
spirit with the
volleyball motto
"Play Hard, Earn
Respect".

14

The bonfire wasn 't the only thing hot on Friday. Jeff Sutherland and
Kevin Sutherland also helped heat things up with the grill.

In spite of the bitter cold , Coming Home
candidate Brandi Foltz still smiles at the
crowd at the game.
Ready and set to go! Coby Bloodsaw, Jamal
Vaught, John Roan , Steve Anderson and
Robert Price pack to attack Cheyenne
Mountain's football team .

Hot stuff and they seem to know it. Jon Call,
Ryker Carlson, Mitch Dziduch, Sean Camacho,
Mike Felice, Justin Blake, (Bottom) Justin
Chander, V1nce Algent, and Damel Williams
found time in their busy schedules to go to the
bonfire.
Stressed? Angered? Well, not anymore Tim
Lopez takes part in the annual car smash by
making the first punch to the front wmdshield.

15

"I thought the council did a
great job for the dance. The
decorations were great and
the music was fine , but there
were too many lights on ,"
said Ricky Matias.
"I was happy and excited
for him ," said Casandra
Salazar.
"I was very surprised ... it
was an
honor and
something I'll never forget,"
said Salazar in response to
how it felt to be crowned
queen.

With the tropics on
mind and a backdrop
to set the mood, the
King and Queen sit

candidates.
With the colorful
array of dresses
and suits this year,
Jennifer Graves and
Kevin Bechert went
with the
more
traditional look.

16

Amanda Rushford and Tim Lopez hold
eachother close during the Coming Home
Dance. It was one of the many
oppurtunities for couples to dance without
bumping into other people.

After a week of showing our school spirit, we were ready
to get all dressed up and party. This year's Coming Home theme
was some what of a tropical setting and with pineapples and
palm trees; it truly could have been mistaken as "paradise."
Being announced earlier in the week, the nominees for
king and queen waited excitedly for the outcome. Casandra
Salazar, queen, was crowned at the Coming Home game and
later on that night she crowned Ricky Matias, king. "I think it was
good that Ricky won ... he deserved it", said JenniferTobin, junior,
who also went to the dance. Regina Sowell, a senior, said, "It
was cute .... they [Matias and Salazar] made the atmosphere of
the dance more relaxed." Another highlight of Coming Home was
the music. "They were great DJ's; they played a variety of
music," said Lynette Andrews, freshman.
Many students seemed to be disappointed about the
lighting. It wasn't as dark as usual, but that didn't seem to stop
the party. Nothing was going to stop this party. Everyone came
for a good time and tons of fun, and that's exactly what they got.
With the last ever Coming Home dance now in the past,
and with next year the beginning of an actual Homecoming, this
last Coming Home was a great way to end a tradition and look
to a smooth transition into a new one.
The dance was full of
surprises. As Desmond
Zoller spins Rayven Irons,
she suddenly smiles for the
camera.
Kelly Baird and Redriche
Carlson hold each other
close during one of the slow
songs played at the dance.

Here To }Vlake lin 9mp ression
It's their first year here, but don't let that fool you. The freshmen class of '98-'99 are here
to make a statement. From working on the homecoming float to running for freshmen class
president, this year's 'little ones' weren 't going to stand by and let the upperclassmen have all
the say.
One of the problems freshmen are faced with is the new learning environment.
"Teachers are more strict on due dates and assignments" according to many of the students
in the freshmen class. while most freshmen are used to a laid back atmosphere. One student,
Kyle Elliott, put it this way. "In most of them [classes] staying awake [is the challenge]." This
is partially from the hour and half classes they're not used to. But, like we said before , they're
here to make an impression and they have done so by adjusting pretty well to the new schedule.
Nevertheless, from beating all the other teams in mud volleyball to dressing wacky during
Halloween , the Freshmen have made an exceptionally bold statement this '98-'99 school
year.

What are some goals fdOLA
have in life?
Eighty Freshmen students were asked
about their goals in life. Many answered back
saying their main goal is to pass high school
and move on to college . Other students got into
more detail and we got some really interesting
comments.
" To go to college , get a good job, retire when
I'm 30, and relax the rest of my life with my wife
and kid. " - anonymous
" To become a video game designer and get
straight A's." - Chris Dittmann
"To look perfect for one day and to be a lawyer."

T h e "(joor;t" and The "(3ar;t"
You can chose your friends but you can't choose your family. Yikes! That could be a bad thing when
it comes to having an older brother or sister in high school with you . Getting picked on day in and day out
gets to be annoying. Being tormented at home and at school too! It's overwhelming .
Amazingly a lot of freshmen students said it really isn't that bad having a sibling at school. Many
students said that it was an advantage. "They give you money and stand up for you ," said Mitchell Dziduch.
Lots of students like the idea that their brothers and sisters stick up for them and give them money. We
also found a lot that liked the idea of not having to walk to and from school everyday. Of course there
was the other side of the issue.
There were a lot of complaints about how "annoying" older siblings can be. How they're always
there when you manage to do something wrong , (Which isn't often , right?) . It also never goes unnoticed
how they have to be the first ones to run home and tell Mom and Dad all about it either. Jessica Ainsworth
stated, "My brothers always know what I'm doing. They must have spies watching me." She also added,
"Not that it's always bad. If they have spies then they know when I need their help." This just goes to show
the good things and the bad things about having brothers and sisters in high school with you. Imagine,
if only you could pick and choose your siblings.

What do the ]reshmen think?
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
We decided that it would be nice to let the freshman get a say for once. So we pulled out :
the school roster, closed our eyes, and picked two freshmen at random. Those chosen were Brad :
Johnson and Joey Thomas. We wanted to get our two freshmen's opinion on some pretty :
important issues. We met in the yearbook room during lunch (yes, they gave up their lunch hour!) :
and the following is what happened:

What do you think about the block schedule?
I like it, it's so much easier because we have a lot more time to learn
things.
What do you like to do on weekends?
Hang out with my older brother. I play basketball on a team and stuff.
What were some embarrassing moments you've had being a fresh
men?
All the seniors making fun of you.
Seniors! (with amazement) make fun of you?
Only because my brother's a senior.
How did you like going from a junior high to a high school?
I like junior high better, I knew more people there.
I like it because it was a big transition, but it's so much easier with the
block schedule than junior high and I just like the school better.
What are some things upper classmen have done to you?
I asked a couple where room numbers were and they were pretty nice
about it, but then some just hassle me just for the heck of it.
I have a lot of friends.
I guess most freshmen would say that the seniors are all bad just
because they're seniors, but I look up to the seniors. I like them a lot.
What do you think about the lunch hour?
I get to go home!
I guess I like it because it's longer and you get to socialize more.
How about counting credits?
I work harder because I get credits for them [classes].
How about peer pressure?
There are some students who help you out now and then and then there
are some that just want to trash you.
What do you think is the most important part of school?
Getting my credits because I have to go to college. I don't know what
I want to go for yet; I just know it's going to be a good thing if I go.
Doing good with your grades and getting along with your peers,
because you're going to be with them for four years. You might as well
get along with them .

Sophomores ,"li Class of Their Own"
With one year of high school in their past, the sophomores proved to the upper class men
that they were not the freshmen that they used to be . Sophomores this year seemed to be in
a class of their own by taking on more responsibilities and expectations to be a more mature
class. Mainly the biggest impact was in the performance of the sophomores both academically
and mentally. Making the transition from a freshman to a sophomore was hard to do at first.
One of the changes was the respect issue. "I think it's a lot better to be a sophomore because
you get more respect from upperclassmen and you don't get looked down ," said Gary Cooper.
Another sophomore , Chris Twitty said , " I think it's fun to be a sophomore because you get a
feeling of authority and you get to pick on the freshmen. "
Sophomores have changed drastically in the past year. One of the other changes they
encountered was the ability to drive. They could drive themselves to school and not have to
rely on other people to cart them around. Another change was being plagued with questions
about everyday life at high school from the new freshman. Questions included directions to
their next classes to the best places to buy their lunch from . All of the sophomores have unique
personalities which defines them as a class of their own .

CCaught Well

We will always look back to our high school class.
years and remember all the different experiences.
Most of them will probably be memories of friends
and dances, but there's one thing that people often
forget ... we came here to learn. The knowledge
that we get from the time we're in grade school is
what gets us into the working field; it helps us to
live out in the real world. Academics might seem
like the worst part of high school, but, if you really
think about it, there's plenty of good memories.
Remember the group projects or the disection of
animals in science class? Well, the disection probably wasn't a good memory, but you have to admit
it was fun to chase the student next to you around
the class room with a pig intestine. How about
surfing the net looking for information on that class
project? It was a whole lot of fun doing the class
work, but you might want to forget when you
choked-up giving the presentation. These are the
things that made our academic classes great
memories ,and we managed to learn some things,
too, such as: Don't chase the student around the
class room unless you want detention!
Do you need a lawyer?
Then Chris Copeland,
James Nail, and
Alexander Cole are the
guys to go to. When you
have experience from
your American History
class, then it is easier
to understand how the
United States government system works.

86

Michelle Roof tries to catch up on her
homework when ever she has time,
even when she has a few spare
moments in band class.
Trying to figure out how the camera
works for the class project is the easy
part, right? Melanie Baker, Jamileth
Maxwell , and Line Saole managed
to figure it out after a few tries.

and that all the shelves are neat.

89

The well spent time that Howard Perry and Josh Ainsworth
put into their work really shows once they are finished .

A great artist like

beauty of other
peoples' art. Because
Willie is in the advanced art class, she

Drag your feet into class, the bell rings and you
would rather be in bed.

Trying to figure out what an artist is expressing
through their pieces can be difficult. Ryan Lewis
was lucky enough to take a trip to Denver to study
different pieces.

After a while you comprehend what the teacher
said, the quiz you thought was on Thursday lies
upon your desk.
You just barely finsh as the bell rings for the next
block then you realize it's a purple day, not black!
Stress builds up and you take a deep breath. You
prepare to tell the teacher your homework's on
your bed.
Lucky for you, the teacher's not upset. If you turn
it in tomorrow, then you won't get an F.
You finally make it home and kiss the precious
floor. You're just happy not looking at the blackboard.
Then you sit and ponder and you find that your
day was pretty normal. The stange part is that
you'll do it again tomorrow.

opportunity for people to feel the love of
Valentines. Some got up the courage to ask
their crush to the dance, others spent it with
their sweethearts, and some decided to just
enjoy the time and go alone. Either way the
dance was a blast. The blaring music motivated the dancing mood , and both students
and teachers got their groove on. The slow
songs seemed to fill the dance floor more
than the fast songs, but when people danced,
they really danced. Different groups of friends
gathered together and showed off their dancing skills.
After too much dancing it was really
nice to go refresh yourself at the refreshment
stand outside of the gym. Tables were also
set up so you could sit down with friends
or that special someone. Heart shaped
confetti and floral center pieces gave the
gym just the right touch for such a special

Season of Vast CJntensitlj
Never mind the fact that it was not a winning season for our Grizzly soccer
players. The team had an intensity to their style of playing that only heightened
as the season progressed. Players started to talk to their fellow teammates
during the game and this resulted in finishing with the ball in the net. Physically,
team members were at their best in that they were not struggling with exertion as
were their opposition. No matter whether they played in wind or rain, cold or heat
their will to win never decreased or diminshed. Fans were coming to cheer the
team on with yelling and some came to just get a glimpse of the improved team
in action.
The intensity contributed to some memorable games for the team. One
game in particular where this feeling and attitude are clearly shown, was against
Cheyenne Mountain. The atmosphere was hot as the fans sat in the cold to lend
encouragement to the team as they held the Indians to overtime. The crowd and
team were pumped as the end of overtime loomed closer. Fifteen seconds before
the end, Cheyenne scored and our Grizzlies were defeated. After the game,
Captain Misha Thomas congratulated the team on a well played game that clearly
showed what the Grizzlies were made of.

r<aising the txpectations
This year's varsity and junior varsity team's learned a lot throughout the
season. The junior varsity, however, won the league by beating Widefield by a
score of 12-0. This was the first league championship of any sport at Mesa Ridge.
The JV ended up with a 5-4 record. As for the varsity, they played very tough all
through the season. There was not one game that they weren't out of. This year
the varsity faced very difficult challenges. The whole year starters were getting
hurt, and that made it tough on the rest of the team, but the Grizzlies still played
tougher than ever. Mesa Ridge also produced a lot of all-conference players this
year with high hopes of playing in the future. Coach Jim Felice believes that the
Mesa Ridge football program is headed in the right direction and is excited about
the future because of the effort of this year's team.
DE #92- Ronnell Snodgress- "Sometimes we didn't play like a team should , but towards the
end we started to play as one."
FS #21- Robert Price- "We played good, but we still lost more games then we should have, but

lll overall we did well."

'Laking their J3umps on the R,oad lAp
"Hardwork" and "Dedication" are two words to describe our Mesa Ridge
varsity volleyball girls. The season has been tough but working out the tough
spots are a part of life on a volleyball team. For their wins, the team celebrated
and prepared for the next game, and, for their losses, they learned what mistakes
were made and played with more determination for perfection in the next game.
"Skills had improved; we had our up and down moments, but I think we learned
a lot from them, which will help in the seasons to come. Good job, Girls!!!" Varsity
Coach Lisa Whorton said.
With four seniors, five juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman our
Grizzly girls took action and did their best, placing second in the White Division
Mesa Ridge Tournament. Although our seniors are leaving this year, the future
appears bright with the new and returning players.

Everyone could see the hard work the Cross Country team put into this year.
After school you would never see team members sitting around stuffing their faces
with junk food. Instead, you would see the team running around the track or around
the neighborhood. They had to make sure their bodies was in top shape in order
to make it a winning season. So everyday after school at three p.m., they set their
pace and their minds to lots of hard work and long distance running. The cross
country team was always practicing to be the best.
The cross country team wasn't about to just stay around Mesa Ridge and run
around, though. They took their talent all over the place and strutted their stuff all
around Colorado. Desirae Leipply took her talent to State this year, but that wasn't
all. Joe Messersmith made his senior year a record breaking one. He managed to
break the school's record for the best time. "It was a successful season; everyone
improved their personal records," stated Coach Kam Holmquist. All of the team's
after-school practice, hard work, and will to win gave the cross country team a
great season.

Driving through the Season
The golf season was far from perfect, but who can complain with an 8 and
2 record. This year has not only shown improvement but also growth. The team
has grown in size from a mere seven players to twelve; however, only three
players were returning varsity lettermen from last year. Kris Youngblood, the only
senior on the team, achieved the lowest scoring average over 18 holes with a
score of 85, and his lowest score of the season on 18 holes is 77. Lucas
Winkelbauer, the only junior, had the lowest scoring average on 9 holes with a
score of 40, and his personal best on 9 holes is a score of 35.
"We had a good season and we could have won the two games that we lost,
but we needed to eliminate the little mistakes," said Coach Joe Dionisio. The
team had fewer matches than that of the previous year, but they did raise their
win percentage from 50°/o to 75°/o. The teams 8 and 2 record is probably the
achievement that they are most proud of this year. Even with only two losses the
team finished 8th, out of 14, in their division.
Being loaded down with spirit and pride, Mesa's golf team is sure to soar
in the years to come.

Freshman Joel Scafella was voted the
most improved player on the team . He

The varsity softball team finished the season with a 5-11 record. They won
against some teams like Pine Creek and Falcon. Mrs. Karen Wagers said, "We

Metro League. I think the overall season was a success." Two awards were
given to varsity members, Brandy Foltz and Gina Harris for "Best Overall Team
Member." The Grizzlies team had six seniors, seven juniors, and one freshman.
The team showed how they can work together without considering the different
age groups. Gina Harris was the freshman who got the opportunity to play on
varsity. Gina Harris said, "Being on varsity softball was a big adjustment. It was
an honor to play with such talented girls."

Tennis--the sport of champions with the famous backhand, forehand, and
overhand serves. Tennis includes devoted students spending two and a half
hours a day, five days a week on the court in the blistering sun attempting to
perfect the fine art of stroking, slamming , and lobbing. This year was the most
important year for Mesa Ridge tennis team because it was their first year. The
players had a very good season and many records were set. Most players
responded when asked how hard it was for them to win, "You just have to be
devoted and have a positive attitude and help each other out." "The team had
a very successful first year. The tennis team probably had the best record for
the first year in this school out of all the sports. Since we'll only be losing one
player next season due to graduation, I think next year will be better. I'm really
proud of the team!" said Dr. Patrick Lawrence. The tennis players are proud of
themselves and look forward to more successful seasons.

It was a record breaking season for the girls on the Widefield/Mesa Ridge swimming
team. Because of the girls' overwhelming desire to be on the team, this was the first year that
the team was split into Varsity and JV teams. Fifty-five girls ended up on the teams. By
splitting the team, the girls had a greater opportunity to swim in meets. When it came down
to it, everyone had the opportunity to swim in varsity meets when openings occurred in the line
up. The two teams participated in a total of 18 meets. The dual meet record for the varsity
team was 4 and 4. At the Hornet Invitational, Widefield/Mesa Ridge placed first in Division II.
The varsity swim team broke nine new records this season, and Amanda Ledford went to State
for the 100 backstroke. Captains for the '98/ '99 season were Robin Blake, Brandy Foltz, and
Julie Elwell. Brandy Foltz was chosen to be the MVP by earning 641 points for the team in
4 years (220 points this year), holding the position of
captain, and holding 3 individual and 3 relay records.

The Varsity boys' basketball team made a lot of improvements from
last year's learning experience. Coach Brad Dorais stated, "Our program made
a lot of progress this year. The players worked hard and set a precedent for years
to come. The freshmen and J.V. teams both had winning records, and the varsity
was in every game they played, improving last year's win count by a number of
games." The team won a lot more games than their first year last year. Their
maturity, spirit, and skill showed throughout the entire season. The Grizzlies
made history when they defeated the Cheyenne Mountain Indians for their first
league win in the history of the school. To help this happen, Aaron Juarez and
Alex Simpson led the team with their great leadership skills. Players coming off
the bench such as Avery Denton, Will Banks, and Terrence Gibbons really helped
the depth chart of the Grizzlies' roster. It's very obvious that the Mesa Ridge
basketball program is becoming more and more competitive in its short two years
in existence.

With last year's record behind them and a new coach this year, the varsity
girls basketball team has come a long way. Having two wins over Harrison and
wins over Pueblo Centennial and Grandview High School, the team has
improved considerably.
Even with a new coach, the girls say they did well. "He's always positive
and encouraging us," says Khalifah Nailor. Mr. Allen Hollenbeck coached the
girls junior varsity team last year and has since moved up to coach our varsity
girls. "He can't play the game for us, that's our duty," says Regina Sowell, when
asked how she felt Coach Hollenbeck was doing.
Some of the varsity players are doing some very miraculous things.
Andree Doche and Regina Sowell are "always positive and ready to play," says
point guard Khalifah Nailor. Doche and Sowell, along with Janice Robinson and
Jackie Philon, also play for the J.V. team, often playing a tiring game with J.V.,
then ready to go in for the varsity game. But they do have fun. "8 on 8 drills are
the most fun. Everyone gets to participate with out the worry of a real game," says
Janice Robinson.
The team has three new players and even though there are differences
between all the girls, they accepted those differences and worked harder to be
a team instead of individuals out on the court working for themselves.

The Grizzly wrestling team tore through almost all of their competitions to
"pin" down a winning season. With their first year behind them , the team has grown
a considerable amount, both physically and as a team.
The majority of the team agreed that their proudest moments were taking
down Widefield, Wasson, and coming in first in the Mesa Ridge Duals. Without a
doubt this year's wrestlers have been making strides to reach the top. The season
went "pretty well. We did a lot better this year than last," said captain John Roan.
Ten members of the varsity team have reached individual scores of over 500.
"We had a rough start, but as the season went on we came together and started
performing as a team," commented captain Jacob Lueck.

Showing School Spirit
The cheerleaders of Mesa Ridge have shown a lot of class and maturity
throughout the year. Time and dedication played the biggest and
most important part in making this happen. It took practice after practice to
become the squad that we know them as now. With new cheerleading coach
Mrs. Katie Bares-Smith and additions to the squad, there were some
changes, but through their hard work, they brought school spirit to a whole
new level. "This school year was pretty tough. A lot of the girls didn't get
along, but we ignored the differences and worked our hardest. Our only wish
was to have more school spirit from our fellow peers. We still gave it everything
we had, and hopefully next year we will be able to go to state. That's one wish
we all hope we can achieve," Andrea Mata said.

Shakespeare Visits }Vlt<HS
Everything You Wanted to Know About Shakespeare, but Were Afraid to Ask, the
successful production put together by the drama classes, was the first of the dramatic
production put on at Mesa Ridge. It included a series of scenes from various Shakespearean
plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, and Richard Ill. Mrs. Elizabeth Casciaro did
an excellent job with the students. It took a lot of patience to memorize the lines and get the
looks and stage directions right. Many of the student actors came across as very professional.

Cultures can be learned by visiting the country that interests you , but why go there to
learn the culture when you can go to some of these clubs which include International ,
Spanish, German, and French. Being involved in these clubs gives the students an indepth
understanding of different cultures. They go on field trips to different parts of the world that
include parts of Spain and France. The International Club is made up of students that also
learn about other cultures. Mrs. Lorri Abeyta, an International Club sponsor, said, "International
Club is to let everyone experience other cultures and broaden students knowledge for other
cultures around the world." The Spanish Club have their meetings where they have fun and
learn the culture at the same time. Not just the Spanish Club has that opportunity, so do
International, German, and French Clubs. Spanish Club sponsor Mrs. Maria Segura took
students to attend Alejandro Dondiones Dancers of the Americas and to Denver where they
had lunch at Casa Bonita. German teacher Mrs. Nadia Fischer plans various types of
community service projects which included fund-raisers and fun activities such as a trip to
Elitches, food days, and holiday celebrations. French teacher Mrs. Anne Spencer also does
community service as well as cultural activities, and games. These clubs give an understanding of what each culture's life styles and food are like. The clubs help more than a book ever ·
would in understanding other people.

Voices with ]eeling
The choir program here at Mesa has reached a whole new level this year. The motivated
and dedicated students helped to improve the program making the year a complete success.
The team work that students used helped improve personal skills which in turn perfected the
quality of all the different choirs. All the time that was spent to prepare for upcoming concerts
and competitions was well worth it. Both the audiences they performed for and the choir
organizations themselves benefitted. Anyone that was able to make it to a concert would agree
that all the different choirs were outstanding and that they gave great performances. You
definitely didn't want to miss a concert! The really neat part about being in choir or being at
their concerts was that lots of artistic points of view were used. There were lots of interesting
techniques, sounds, and instruments that jazzed up the concerts. The clapping, snapping, and
beautiful music spoke for itself and put the audiences in awe. One of the highlights of the year
was the performance for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday at the Pikes Peak Center. Another
highlight was seven students were selected from the competition for All-State Choir. All of the
hard working groups that dedicated their time and patience to the program made it successful.
Everyone could see the choir strive to reach their goals and be the bestt~at they could be. Great
job to everyone!

Tough competition didn't scare the Mesa Ridge Marching
Band from reaching for their goals. They took their competitors
head on and ended up having a great season. Though the group
didn't take first place in the competitions that they faced , they
managed to give other schools a run for their money. The band
received fourth place at the Pueblo State Competition and sixth
place at the March of Champions. This was a great accomplishment for the band and they are hoping to do even better next
year.
The band radiated school spirit, and they tried their best
to make every performance a memorable one. The band added
much to the football games by getting the crowd motivated. The
loud music, cheering , and dancing brought smiles to many and
lifted other people's school spirit, too. Those that missed the half
time field shows at the home games really missed out. Each
performance progressively got more amazing at each show. The
color guard added dance moves with the trumpet section and it
made for a fantastic performance. It gave the band more of an
artistic drama point of view and also added color to the show. It
was obvious that the Marching Band put in lots of work and effort.
The hour and a half practices after school only made the
group stronger and better each day. It also brought them closer
together as a team; some members would say that the band was
more like a second family to them. Everyone in the group seems
to agree that all the long hours obligated to the Marching Band
were well worth it, and many are anxious for next season.

Spirit
of the Pride
Two of the most important people to the

Ricky Matias and Nicholette Quinata have
worked extremely hard in leading the group
and they have done a great job at it.

fairly successful.
The tradition of the Marching Band is to bind in a
tight spiral before and after each game performance. It always lifts the spirit and confidence of
the "Pride," and it also makes a neat design!

Plaljing All the Ieight Notes
The Mesa Ridge bands started out this year on a good note. The bands displayed their hard
work and dedication at every performance. All the band students helped to keep the band program
organized, and they managed to pull off another great year. Band council , which is a group of
students who were elected by fellow classmates to represent the different bands, were part of the
program's success also. Mesa Ridge was lucky enough to hold the Solo and Ensemble program
again this year. This just shows how great our band program is!
The Mesa Ridge band program is also blessed with many talented performers, many of whom
participated in honor band this year. Sheila Paul and Mike Lopez made the 1999 All State Band! Ben
Williams, Alyssa Whetstine and Stephanie Luck made All City Band, while Brandy Renon and Sheila
Paul made it into Colorado State University Honor Band! Alyssa Whetstine and David Williams made
it to Adams State. Junior Mike Lopez made it into All State, All City, C.S.U and Adams State Bands.
All the students have done extraordinarily well. Congratulations/

Jl!loving to a Higher (;round
The clubs at Mesa Ridge promoted character in our school and started Out-Reach
programs to help the needy.
Some may think that being in a club is easy to do, but it takes a lot of time and dedication.
It takes willing people and good grades to stay a part of the club.
The Bible Club, 180 Degrees, has grown quite large this year and the students seem to
really listen to club president Jenny Ponce low. The Art Club has given Mesa Ridge a new look
with their displays of students' work. They held their first art show this year. They also designed
this year's graduation program. DECA,a marketing club, gives the student a good look on life
involving the business of marketing. Peer Mediators help a lot within school by helping the
students with their problems and gives them someone to talk to besides their parents or other
adults.
Being in a club is a good thing to get involved in or consider getting involved in. Just ask
these students because they know what hard work and dedication really is.

ljearbook
Publishing f30!Ar most memorable experiences
In the beginning of the school year thirteen students filed into the small journalism room
waiting for the chance to produce an item worthy of everybody's attention. Soon thereafter the
advisor, Mrs. Judy Friesth, walks in with a determined look on her face , one that the students
found out would show stress, happiness, relief, and at times frustration. After some opening
comments the students were given page assignments by the editor. This got the ball rolling , one
that will soon begin to roll in many different directions.
Yearbook is a class about discipline, hard work, and learning to get along with your other
classmates. Deadlines start creeping up on the ones assigned to pages and the stress begins
to kick in. Often times the only thing going through the staff's mind is "How am I going to finish
my page?" The students chosen for this class have learned to turn problems into reality or as
some would say: When the tough gets going, the going gets tough. Sometimes people have
come in on Saturday mornings to make the essential deadlines important for accurate
production of the book.
Although yearbook often has some very stressful moments, the class has become close,
sharing many laughs thanks to our staff comedian, Kim Mouriquand. Yearbook is a class that
teaches time management, friendships, and, most importantly, the satisfaction of creating a
product of everybody's favorite memories.

Kim Mouriquand reaches for her piece of paper as
Josh Ainsworth covers it up. She was using it to cover
her face so Mrs. Friesth would not take her picture.
Staff members are often faced with the problem of
arranging things on the page so that they can use up
maximum space. Stacey Townsend and Jessica
Perez are contemplating how to arrange their layout.

165

Tracking down the story
Working during a free period is another
way for Aaron Redford to catch up on his
work and make the deadline for the Bear
Tracker.

Talking on the phone is one
of the many duties on Bear
Tracker. Kelsey Schmidt
works at getting advertising
to place in the paper.
First Row: Mrs . Lisa
Kasyon , Jeremiah Ward ,
Shelly Doyle , Tamika
Miller, Danielle Pullin . Second Row:
Jeffery

Crystal Dandrea, Kelsey
Schmidt, April Nickerson,
Tameshia Miller , Carla
Salisbury. Third Row: Jennifer Jones, Samantha Allnutt , Shayne Champlin ,
Aaron Redford , Joshua
Morse, Stephen Roux.

166

Photographers are important to the staff. Samantha Allnutt checks her
camera bag as April Nickerson looks through pictures for the great one for
the paper.

Technology (computers and scanners)
is a big part of newspaper today. Writing
up a story for the paper, Stephen Roux
works on a computer daily.

Working together and as a team is required of the Bear
Tracker staff and Tamika Miller, Jennifer Schmitt,
Stephen Roux, and JeffSutherland demonstrate that rule .

Editor Jeff Sutherland works on the newspaper dunng
third period because of a conflicting schedule.

During access period is a great time to catch up on
the days work and also a great time for Elizabeth
Lawson and Selena LaTour to tell Mesa Ridge viewers the every day news.
Linda Mayer and Brandy Renon work hard editing
the news for the next day.

Working diligently, Mrs. Proffitt Young makes KMRG

Going through the list of birthdays, Cassandra Prys and Joe
Messersmith type them into the editing the machine.

Or. )Vlark Hatchell )Vloves to a Higher Position
Dr. Mark Hatchell said that his inspiration to be an administrator comes from
seeing his father as a long time school administrator in the Widefield School district
and that he always wanted to be like his dad. This dream became reality when he took
his first job as a high school business teacher and a football, basketball, and baseball
coach. After that, he had eight years of administration jobs at four different high
schools and one year as planning principal for Mesa Ridge. Dr. Mark Hatchell says
about his farewell to teaching and administrating that he is "excited and flattered
about my new position in central administration. But this is also a sad time for me. The
opportunity to be the planning principal and the first principal for a new high school has
been an incredible experience I will always cherish. Really a dream job for any
administrator. I will miss Mesa Ridge." The student body and staff will remember the
contributions that he made to the start up of this school and will miss him greatly.
