Manny · nt iago ( I I) and
his family travelled to New

York. They had a blast.

When the bell rang on the last day of school, everybody bolted out; tomorrow is the first
official day of summer. In Colorado, summers are fun but they were made for travel.
Whether it was in the country or out of the country.
NMy favorite part was going hiking .Nsaid, Hector Madrigal (12) . Living in Colorado gives us
access to beautiful places for hiking which, is always an experience. Yes, we may have great
views, but Europe has the culture and history that we don't.
NMy favorite part was going to The Five Villages in ltaly.Nsaid, Makayla Shoup (11) . The
students went to Italy and walked around The Five Villages, which is a cliff side in Italy.
People have built their city on the steep landscape overlooking the sea . There is a lack of
modernization which adds the charm; paths, trains, and boats are the only things that
connect the village to the outside world .
HI chose to go on the French trip because I have never traveled out of the country beforeN
said, Dewayne Johnson (12). The French students had a once in a life time chance to travel
out of the country with a teacher; traveling alone to a different country that doesn't speak
English can be challenging .
Summer is the time to relax and take in the beauty that is around you; whether it be in the
USA or in another country.

Traveling In Michigan
Josh Sanderson (11) had the amazing opportunity to
travel to a lighthouse off Lake Michigan in Charlevoix or
Petoskey in Michigan. One experience that he will never forget
is when, '"I took the helm of my second cousins's
sailboat on Lake Charlevoix by Boyne City.• While on the boat,
he often swam. '"I only swam to shore once because I almost
drowned:
later he went to Lover's Arc on Lake Superior in th U.P.
of Michigan. While there, '"I was backpacking in Pictured Rocks
Nationar Forest:
His summer ended with a trip to an amusement park.
'"My favorite part was The Catapult at Mt. Olympus in
Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.· Enjoying America was something
he will never forget.

Imagine a place where one day the wind blows nicely and the sun crisps the
leaves. The next day, flakes of snow fall softly on the tip of your tongue, small and
welcoming . You can experience all four seasons of the year in one day;
this is life in Colorado.
Many people leave, but why? "I enjoy living in Colorado, but it gets so boring .
I guess I'm just so anxious to get out of the state and travel," says Alec Castillo (10).
Later, he finialized by stating, "One of my favorite parts of Colorado is the view. The
mountains just always seem to amaze me although I see them everyday."
Along with the beautiful view, the diverse geography of the state provides
many activites to experience. After asking Joey Miller (10) if he enjoyed living in the
colorful state and what some of his favorites parts are, he answered with, "Yes, I
love living in Colorado. My favorite parts are being able to snowboard and go white
water rafting ."
Ethan Beaver (11) couldn't have summed it up any more perfectly than, "Waking up

Spirit Week Floods the School
The crowd roared, the music boomed, and all anyone heard was the announcer through
the speaker, "AND NOW FOR YOUR 2014-2015 HOMECOMING NOMINEES."
The homecoming assembly is always filled with fun activities that had the crowd yelling for
more. They do things that not only involved the students but also the teachers. Being a part of the
assembly was a big deal .. but being behind the scenes of the assembly setup was even bigger. *I
was most proud of the crowds excitement during the assembly. We haven't seen school spirit like
this in years and it was great seeing the crowd so pumped," said Jessica Brewer (121, the president
of Student Cabinet.
One of the best parts of Spirit Week was the final assembly. It was event that many will
remember. "It all happened in the blink of an eye. The crowd was the craziest I've ever seen .
Between cabinet members, it was kind of hectic. But I think the crowd was really enjoying our hard
work,* said Clarissa Escobar (lll, a member of Student Cabinet.
The crowd's intensity allied up to the closing event ... the announcement of the
homecoming queen and king nominees. By the time the nominees were announced, the crowd was
rowdy and cheering on their favorite couple. "It was very nerve wracking for all of us. It was actually
funny because we were all hiding under the bleachers and constantly asking the other if our hair
looked okay. The group of girls were just great. While we were waiting, we all agreed that if one of
us falls, we all fall. It was a fun experience," says Crystal Lastrella (12) one of the homecoming queen
nominees. Although the homecoming assembly is only an hour and a half long, there was still a lot
of preparation and A LOT of time that goes into it. But after all the screaming and chanting, students
felt excited by the momentum of the week.

She woke up excited and went to get her hair and nails done for the best night of the year. She put on
her dress and shoes and waited for her date to pick her up. This is what most girls go lhough on Homecoming
night. One of the first dances of the year, it's a time when you get a chance to ask your girlfriend or even your
crush to dance.
Homecoming is a time when you get together, have fun and get crazy. "I loved homecoming, it was the
best best dance, I've ever had. Especially since I got to dance with my pnnce charming, Shawn Stein,· said Sierra
Jones Ill).
It's an opportunity to show off your moves to the school, and dance to your favorite song . "Homecoming
was crazy and fantastic' Too much twerking but classy! We all had great timet" said Charlie Tedder (12) and
Josue Lopez (12).
Finally the time that everyone had been waiting for ... Who would be the Homecoming Queen and King
of 2014? The nominees of the night were nervous. It felt as though time was going by as slow as a snail. Time to
fix your hair and look nice for the picture they will take when I wtn . "The winners ol ttiis year Homecoming King
and Queen are Brittany Hernandez (12) and Josh Gloor (12)1" When they winners were announced, crowd went
wild; everyone was very happy that they won Queen and Kingt
Homecoming Queen and King is a dream that mosf girls and guy want to be. Homecoming Queen and
King are the stars of fhe night and for lhat rest of the year. It takes a month to vote for the Homecoming Queen

Believe! Everyone believes in something or someone. This commumtiy believes in the schools,
students, and teachers. One day out of the school year, we come together as a communtiy
to celebrate our rivalry with our opposing school. We don't just celebrate our rivalry, we also
celebrate this community, school, and clubs with a parade.
HOne thing I love about the parade is that it demostratres the unity throughout this
community. And I thinks thats awesome.N Mr. Skalla said . He has grown up in this community

What would the world be without nice people?
The world as we know it would be surrounded

do to keep the nice people around, YOU could
be the nice person . Nlf you see someone sitting

willing to meet someone new,N
said Jayden Hicks (9). There are
many ways to spread kindness
such as volunteering . Crystal

ways to be nice. You could be what's called an
S2S Guide, an S2S Guide or Student to Student,

introduce them to their friends, help the out when
needed, and take them to each

says Emily Barilli (10). So whether

Joy is an emotion every human has

So, does that change when we become

not! Everyone at our school has their happy

It's difficult to not celebrate on what is considered one of the scariest days of the year
(other than Friday the 13th or a grandparent's birthday). Yet as students get older, the
days of dressing up and roaming the neighborhood, trick-or-treating, begin to fade and
are replaced by handing out candy or going to a friend's house to binge watch scary
movies. Perhaps the closest thing an individual could get to the good old days would
be chaperoning a younger sibling to the Broad moor to get the king sized candy bars ...
Though, since tradition is an important aspect of our school, students were allowed to
dress up and had the opportunity to impress their fellow man with their creative and
interesting costumes; some of which struck fear into the souls of teachers and peers
alike.
All humans experience fear, whether it be a mild scare or a full-blown phobia . Some
of these being more common than others; things like clowns, spiders, or heights. Jay
Grebas (12) is especially afraid of heights. Naturally, there are some people who are
scared of something another person may call 'irrational'. So, what is it that makes us
afraid of another thing? Just like happiness, fear is as primal as it gets ... We are
hard-wired this way.

It's Friday night, the sun has set, the lights are beaming, and the
crowd is fierce . The boys emerge from the helmet for their comeback from last
year's tough season; they put in their hard work and played their finest. NHard
work beats talent when talent doesnt work hard .Nsaid Luke Thirsk (10).
!he game of life is a lot like football . You have to tackle your problems, block
your fears, and score your point when you get the opportunity.N said Coach
Johnson.
There is a side that not many people get to see, which is the hard work,
dedication, and struggles the entire football team has to overcome. They
do everything they can to perform their best, but most importantly, they do
everything to help their team play better. It is not always about the win and
when someone is frustrated about the game there are always teammates to
pick them up. HFootball is my first love. I was born to play it, and I'll play it till
die,Nsaid Steven Starke (11).
A quote that shows how driven out football players are is from Tavian
Valentine (11) who said, NFootball isn't just a sport; it's a passion and a way of
life.NTo some people, football is more than just a sport ... it's not a chance, but a
privilege; a privilege to be a Gladiator.

Football is one of the sports that gets the community
together, much like a family. No matter what happens on the
field, the community would always be together, even if there
with a win or loss. Our community will never break in half over a
loss ... And we always become stronger as a team .
Darren Ford (10) said, "The fourth quarter defines who we are.
We need to play with dignity, class and most importantly, as a
team ."
Football is one of the hardest sports there is to play.
It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to become a well
known team in the city. Football isn't just a game to entertain
people, but it gets the team pumped up and become close as
friends and family. "I like playing football because I meet new
players and coaches." said Elijah Whatley (9).
This past year, our team has been one that every
school wants. It's because of our hard work and for the spirit
that the school has. It doesn't matter if the season ended, the
football team will always be the best with new or old members.
"All men are created equal; some just work harder in the off
season." said by Mackinzi Madison (9).

Varsity Volleyball
Lady Glads stepped out on the court. Six strong ladies eyed the
players, ready to dominate. There is equal passion and the urge to win in
both teams that play.
Varsity player Shamari Lewis (12) said, "By the end of the season
played as a team and worked hard and never gave up.The best game
we had was when we played against Sierra . Everyone was on there A
game and we just destroyed them .l really loved working with the girls."
Jordan Edmonds (12) told me "Honestly, I know the season could
have gone better, but we improved a lot as a team . It was amazing to
even hear compliments from other teams when they faced us a second
time.We had a good time together and I will miss practicing with the girls.
1have no doubt that they will kill it next year."Volleyball is a tough sport,
however with the smiles and humor that are attached to the girls; you can
never have a bad day.
Our Seniors Shamari Lewis (12),Jordan Edmonds (12), Hazel
Wallace (12) and Crystal Lastrella (12) will forever be a Widefield Gladitor.
Even though there were ups and downs to the season, the ladies never
gave up and kept on hitting.
Even though the Lady Glads at first did not have a great season, they kept
on working hard. In the end, they not only started winning games, but
came closer as a team .

It's mine. Mine, to escape all stress in life, and volleyball is a way to
that. Nl play volleyball because it is my favorite sport. I am an outside hitter
and it is so fun . I try to encourage my team as much as possible and tell them
good job when they either mess up or do good .H said Brittany Armijo (10).
Volleyball is a sport of aggression that helps relief. HMy favorite
position is Libera not only because I am short, but because the floor is my best
friend . What's not better than having floor burns and bruises?N said Kynzie
Cole (11) . With bruised legs and worn knee-pads, they would sprint halfway
across the court to get to a ball that is would be descending from it's peak in
the air.
Nl did volleyball this year because I wanted to have a different level of
challenge from Junior High .N said Kiri Carmody (9) . Diving is an important part
of volleyball because you can't just let the ball hit the floor right in front of you .
Nl've decided to play volleyball this year because it's my sport. I've played
for 11 years.Nsays, Brianna Isidore (11). Blocking is a very important defensive
aspect of volleyball at higher levels.
Volleyball is not just passing a ball back and forth over a net, it's
much more than that. HMy favorite position is middle hitter because I love
the sensation of blocking the ball, and middle hitter blocks every spike. It's
also one of the quickest positions, I like how it keeps me on my toes.Nsays,
Madelyn Hager.(9) Volleyball players work hard on and off the court. That's
what makes them so unique.

Boys Soccer
Everyone has a passion . For some people it is playing
an instrument, others it is academics. But for these boys,
it is the sport of soccer. Eighty minutes full of slide tackling,
running, passing and finally having the soccer ball make that
amazing noise when it slams into the back of the opponent's
net. "Soccer is life." according to Kyle Whittle (12).
While playing soccer you have to learn how to operate
as a team. Not even as a team, as a family . Although the
team has had better seasons, each is unique. Some of these
boys have been playing together since they were six years
old, while others have just met this season . During the season
the teams will lose together, win together, practice together
and grow closer together.
Seniors will say goodbye to their last year of high
school soccer and hopefully move on to bigger things, such
as a college level sport. The underclassmen athletes will
take good care of their reputation as a successful team. But
an athlete's grade doesn't matter; the only number they are
concerned with is the number on the back of their jersey.
George Arciniega (10) said, "In soccer it is easy to beat
someone who never tries, but hard to beat someone who
never quits." The Widefield Gladiator Boys Soccer team never
quits.

Varsity Sotball
Each season in a sport has its own unique challenges and
changes, and this year's Varsity softball season was no different.
Despite the many challenges and changes going on, the team still
managed to play competitively against many teams, even if they
didn't end the game with a win . According to Sapphire Starke (10),
" ... it was a good season for my first year on Varsity."
Even though many of the teammates felt as if the season could
have gone better, considering the amount of injuries the team had
as a whole, it's safe to say the season didn't go as planned. Faith
Ortiz (ll) said, "We ended the season great with a 17-2 win against
Mesa." Which, let's be real, is all that really matters in sports;
pummeling the rival.
Looking back, the season was rough . Some of the best
experiences come from the toughest of times. I would like to
thank our coach, James Brown, for stepping up and teaching us to
play for the love of the game. I also want to thank players Ashley
Menini (ll) and Zoey Stealey (ll) for being leaders and never
giving up, even when things weren't looking up. Also, thanks to
Cheyenne Tepley (ll) for being my handy-dandy co-captain, and
for always reminding me to, "not let the fear of striking out keep
you from playing the game."

hot. I'm proud of all the girls that tried out, if it wasn't for them
this season wouldn't be as remarkable as it was. "Celestina
Romero said,(lO)."As a team, we started off a little rough, but we
got over our differences and won about ten games not including
our tournaments. We owe it all to our new coaches, Jennifer and
Allie". All the girls really enjoyed each other's company. Our skills
and our bond are we attributed to the team .
The C-Squad season of 2014 and 2015 was marvelous. We
excelled so much, from the first day of tryouts. "Makayla Lopez
(10) said "this season this year went great! all the girls tried there
best. can't wait for next year." I'm so proud of all the girls everyday
blazing hot or pouring rain. They came out and gave their hardest
at practice and games". If you watched our first game and our
last, it was easy to see the improvement in skills and attitude.
I cant wait for next year, I hope all the same great girls come out
next year and play.

We f1ght!
Focusing on the starting line, waiting for the moment that will test you both
mentally and physically. The starting gun goes off and in a mad dash, a crowd
about 100+ run with the same goal: To be the leader, and gloriously cross the
finish line. People seem to love to stick cross countrv with tile stereotype that
every one is just running, no pressure at all, it's not that competitive. The truth is
cross country was one of the most competitive sports in the fall season .
NRunning defines me. It is a euphoric feeling . I look forward to it everyday. It
keeps me connected to life.Hquotes Maximilhano Martinez (10). Max had one
of the greatest seasons ever in Widefield cross country history. Max was in the
top five ~finishers in 7 races this season and got first place in 3 of the meets. Plus
he had an impressive 4th place finish at the state meet out of 189 runners. He
certainly has a bright future ahead of him .
Tabitha Frandsen (9) simply said, Hit went great!H Tabitha was the best girl on
the girl's team only with one race that Bethany Rodrigues (12) beat her. Other
wise Tabitha is shaping up to be one of the best girls in the 4A region .
Cole Munoz (9) remembered the season by saying, HYeet.HBut then it
quickly changed when his family saw his quote. My fam(ilyl keeps me going .N
Cole was ttie 3rd best runner the entire season except for the Dave Sanders
invitational when he beat the 2nd best runner on the team Matthew Arbegast
(10). Otherwise Cole Munoz will be one of the most important runners for fhe
future of Widefield cross country.
Cross country may be one of the most competitive sports of the fall season
but it has the b1ggest family of any sport. You never hear any negative talk or
bullying on cross country, because everyone on the team cares about each
other, wflether you are one of the slowest on JV or the fastest runner on varsity
everyone cares about you . That is what I love the most about cross country.

Tennis
This year's tennis season was absolutely fun . Despite the long stressful hours
at tourneys, a few match losses, and so much effort and energy put into the
season, the team had its fair share of wins and laughs. "Alright afro!" was
Caiden Orosco's (10) favorite moment of the season . A tennis ball accidently hit
someone's car came out and we all thought he said "afro." Joshua Miller's (12)
favorite moment in the season, was the phrase he quotes "Hardcore Parkour!"
During one of our doubles matches, you're welcome Josh haha .
Tennis is relaxing and a fun sport. Every point, every game, every match that
they won was a great feeling . Every match loss wasn't a failure but a lesson, it
helped us work harder and to do our best. We passed the "rock" in our serves,
groundstrokes, and volleys and tossed the "ball feed" during king of the court
or practice runs .
This year seniors Joshua Miller, Bracken Anderson, and Robi Rayos (12) placed
4th at regionals . Was a surprise, we didn't expect to go so far for our first year
playing . Kudos to our other members who put in their effort this season, and
thank you guys for the support, was definitely a memorable time. Last, at
regionals we all shared a laugh when another player from a different school
took the game way too seriously and screamed "Come on, Lers Go!" Good
times.
Thank you coach Anderson, for working us, and thanks to the team for a
memorable season . As a tennis player once said, "Life is like a match, every
game begins with love, each point is an opportunity, no matter how far out
of the match you think you are, there's always a comeback, we celebrate the
wins, and we learn from the losses."

Golf
The crowd is silent and all you hear is the wind blowing through the
trees. Young Cameron Skalla (10) draws his club back and swings away,
then watches the ball in the distance. Asking Cameron Skalla What was the
best part about golf? His responce was, "The best part would have to be
the upperclassmen . They are very good inflinces and are really fun to hang
with ."Aiso asking Cameron Skalla Do you have anything else to say about this
years golf season? he relplied by saying, "I got hit with a club and had to get
seven stiches."
Then interviewing Nate Stark (12) and asking him Why do you like
playing the sport? he replied by saying, "Golf is a physical and mental sport,
and teaches good technique."
One of the newest to the team, Trevor Williams{ll), said, "one of the
best thing about the golf season was being able to have fun with friends
while playing a good game of gole This won't be the last time we trevor
williams because he plans on coming back next year for the season " Next
year I hope to get better, hang out more with friends, and never get hit with a
golf club. GOOD LUCK next year Trevor.
Golf is a difficult sport there's so many different clubs, so many rules,
they use crazy lingos such as birdies and bogeys. But that's the best part
about golf all the crazy lingos and such; golf is a challenging and adventours
sport, and maybe that's some of our peers chose to go out for golf.

Cheer leading
Blue, gray, and white win!
Cheerleading is not always considered a sport, but
cheerleading is a mix between a spirit club
and gymnastics. " I hate it, we condition and practice and go to
competitions just like every
other sport, but it's not considered a sport. It just makes me
mad." said cheerleader Yeisha Turner (10).
Girls who are cheerleaders say that they feel like during practices
they do just as much work as football players. Unlike the other
sports cheerleading is a year round sport.
" I like cheerleading because your team is like your 2nd family,
and they are always there for
you," said Kylie Almeida (10) . Just like every other team, they form
bonds and since
cheerleading is a year long sport, they become sisters.
"Cheerleading is my escape. It helps me
get away from reality and just have fun," said Cecily Johnson
(10). The cheer squad is more like a family than a team . They are
sisters.

Isa 'ik' Provost (9) is diving ir~

Swimming is a sport of technique and individual strength . But
is does not only show how strong you are, it also shows the
strengths of the girls on your team . You are all an important
part of a machine. A machine that if it is missing a piece, it will
not function efficiently. Each piece can make the difference of if
they go to state or not. It does not matter if you're a freshman
or a senior, you all work hard to strive for a win. Your coaches
will always be there to support you and suggest changes to you
and it is very important to listen to your coaches. Coach Rottman
gave me a word after I asked her, "Do you think everybody's
action affect each other on the team?" She responded with
"Absolutely, when swimmers or divers are pumped up, that
positive energy feeds everyone else too and vice versa ." They
might suggest on working on upper body strength to swim faster,
listen to them it will work! They might suggest working on your
diving because it isn't at its best right now, work on it, it will work!
When a teammate or a coach tells you you need to work on
something, they are not trying to criticize and bring you down,
they're only trying to help you . If you do not listen, you're not a
good teammate, and the team needs each other. You're all an
important part of the team.

The

Wide~l!ls~idge Swim~ D~v~

have

improved greatly in the past two years under the direction
of Ms. Mullikin from Mesa Ridge and Mr. Schurz and Mrs.
Rottman from Widefield . This year, after Mr. Schurz moved
to Maine, the new coach is Mr. Peterson from the Widefield
High School Math Department. Besides the seven or so
returning swimmers from previous years, we have about six
underclassmen that have joined our growing program. We've
had a great start so far, and we look forward to finishing the
season strong through May. Along with Josh Casper 112), we
have two new divers that show promising futures . This year,
through many contradictions, the seniors of the Widefield
Swim and Dive team decided to wear racers . In other words,
speedos. Robbie Miller (12), Josh Casper (12), Nick Scholl(l2),
Bracken Anderson 112) and Kyle Hayden (12) are the seniors
that decided to do this and Jarron Miller !lll had also made
the decision to follow in their footsteps. No doubt they'll be
shaving off seconds in their new gear. In other news, our
200 Medley Relay team, led by senior Bracken Anderson
in the butterfly, Josh Canada (Mesa) in the backstroke and
Jarron Miller Ill) in the freestyle, is setting their sights on a
state qualifying time. Swimming has never been as awesome
these past three years and I look forward to seeing the
improvement that we have worked so hard to achieve.

Wrest ling
You may have heard that the Widefield Wrestling program was under new
management this year. To replace Mr. Foltz, we received Coach Erickson, a former
Widefield wrestler who has coached in District 3, both at the junior high and high school
level, for years; and Coach Walker, the Dean of Students at Janitell Junior High and
another long-time coach, as our head coaches. In addition, we also had four assistant
coaches. Mr. Martinez, the head coach at Sproul Junior High, who finished out the junior
high season and has helped us during practice every day. Coach Kylie, a former Widefield
teacher and coach, as well as a retired referee. Coach Dabelko, who has coached at
Watson Junior High School for four years now and continues to support his son, Steven
Dabelko, along with the rest of us, at the high school level. And Brandon Gonzalez, a
graduate and wrestler from Mesa Ridge.
As you can see, we have had a fantastic new staff to coach us this year, and it
has helped tremendously this season. In our first tournament of the year at Fairview High
ool, we placed second as a team out of 11 schools, and we had five wrestlers make the
podium . Throughout the rest of this season, we've also had at least two wrestlers make
the podium at every tournament. In duels, we went 16-8.
The team this year consisted of nine freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors,
and five seniors . Despite the heavy amount of freshmen, we still managed to maintain our
incredible conditioning and fundamentals. The freshmen we had this year are promising,
and I foresee a few state qualifiers in the next few years.
At regionals this year, we had two fifth-placers: Ben Higgs, a senior, at the 182 pound
weight class; and Bryce Lieby, a freshman, at the 113 pound weight class. In third place,
at 195 pounds, was Kris Davis, a junior. He went on to go 1-2 at the Colorado State
Tournament this year. Grayson Parton, a senior, took lsi place at 4A Regionals and went
2-2 at State. And Stephen Dabelko, a sophomore in his second State appearance, placing
6th last year, took 2nd place at the State tournament this year.
We've had an excellent year, and I've had a blast being a part of this team for three years
intense and fun wrestling. Continue to pursue perfection, and you will obtain excellence.
We are a team; we are a family; WE ARE WIDEFIELD.

Varsity Boys
This season the boys got a new coach . Mr Munoz. or Coach
Munoz as some people call him. It's hard to work with a new coach
because it's a big change. Coach and the boys worked perfect harmony
together, their recored was 17-6, that is an amazing record for having a
new coach . The team worked their hardest and worked together to be the
best they can be. This group of boys fought hard and didn't give up even
when it was a very hard and tough game.
To some basketball is just a game, to others it is life, hence the saying,
HBall is life." Captain Brandon Branch (12) said, "It's just fun to play. I had
fun teammates. And I had a really fun time playing ."
Basketball is a game that needs teamwork in order to work. "Teamwork
makes the Dreamwork," said Dezmond Jeans (11) .
"To me, basketball isn't something you play for fun . It's something
you feel. All you have to do is believe in yourself and put the ball in the
basket. You have to try and dare to win. If you discourge yourself, you are
only going to fail but if you try, if you believe yourself, and if you practice
and work your butt off to be the best. Show the opponent you're sure of
what you can do. Then you will win the game the second you touch that
court." said Leon Clemons Ill (11).
At the end of a challenging season, the boys will always remember.

JV & C Squad basketball
To some, basketball is just a sport but to the players
at Widefield, it is more then a sport it is their way of life. They
can't image their life with out it.
AJ Wilkins (10) said, "Basketball is not just a sport, it's a
lifestyle." If that's the case, then the JV and C Squad teams
have quite a basketball life after this year's season . With very
few losses and wins against Mesa Ridge, both teams were
proud of the accomplishments and their season.
Evan Jones (9) said, "A gladiator takes pride in himself and the
community," and the community was proud .
When asked about their favorite parts of the season, many
said, "The bus rides home on the bus." They weren't just
friends sitting next to each other on the bus, they were family .
They played like a team. Jacquarius Grant (9) said,
"A gladiator is a we, greater than me, a player."
After many successes, who knows what next year will bring to
the Widefield basketball teams.

Running down the court, faking out the other team, the Lady Glads
. Our Captains; Haley Armstrong (11), Logan Prater (11) and Shamari Lewis
(12) pumped up the team every time before a game. You have your guards,
wings, and post. During this season, the girls never gave up and kept on
nning . There were games lost, however, they didn't let that bump in the road
damage thier hearts to loving and playing basketball.
Kiana Scott (12) encouragingly told me that" Failure will never overtake
if my determination to succeed is strong enough .NIt was Kiana's last year
and she left with the rememberance of playing a sport with people who
pported her. Eventhough she was the smallest post, she always became big
on game day.
Logan Prater (11) happily told me, "Boys invented it: Girls perfected it. You
can't win unless you learn how to lose.NBeing a Captain on a team shows
you are deticated to not only help the other girls perfect the sport, but also
• onforting yourself. The season was a great one and the girls worked hard as a
team .
Angel Wall (12) stood in silence for a couple of seconds and then told
"A Basketball team is like fingers on your hand . If you can make them come
together it makes a fist, and thars how a team plays."
The Buzzer goes off and the last shot is taken . That is the way to end a

next year.

C - squad and JV Girls
Basketball is a great sport because it is both a team building
and physically challenging sport. And this year the Girl's C-Squad
and JV experienced the challenge of basketball in each game
they played . "Giving up is simply not an option." said Cerena Ortiz
(9) before a practice that day. The quote helped the whole team
through hard workouts and hard games that the team wanted to
give up on, but in the end they stayed strong and kept on winning .
"My work makes me better everyday," said Kaylee Mitchel (10)
while hurrying to her practice area that day, "and I don't complain
at all." Ty Pepper (9) remarked of the girls C-Squad team. "I work
harder to one day be a starter." With the way the girls C-Squad
played, Ty may be a starter in no time. Basketball is an extremly
hard sport to master and people don't realize that simple fact. But
the Girls C-Squad and JV where able to take the challenging factor
in basketball and use it in their amazing season this year. They
learned from every game they played and used new tactics to
achieve victory in their season . I belive that the girls are excited for
next season and with good reason because next year's season will
be amazing!

Every year the Widefield Public Library offers students to compete in an
opportunity to write the scariest story. This year, Sydney Villers (10), Daurie Westberg
(10), and Au'Lexandria Goodwin (10) won honorable mentions for their scary story,
"Fear is But a Thought." They chose to write in the contest to test their writing skills and
wanted to see if they could write a good story. They worked together because they
saw the ad and started talking about it together, bouncing off ideas, debating on what
would make a good story out of their ideas. In the end, they not only had a great time
writing together but accomplished a story that everyone liked.

TEACHER'S VIE\\n Teach in
You have heard of every test possible on the planet. CSAP, TCAP, PARCS,
Scantron, Achievement series, ACT, SAT and the normal, old tests. We, the
students hate them . But how does the science and math teachers feel about
standardized testing and the future for math and science? "I feel that we need
to be careful with how often we test," said Mrs. Carmody, "We sometimes
foucus more on testing than teaching ."
Mr. Bergin was almost on the same page; "It's not bad, but it's not perfect."
Teachers may not feel that standardized tests are not the future of math and
science, they still do a great job getting students through school!

ournalism
Writing and editing is required, but this was the class you wanted to take in
order to become a newspaper reporter. Journalism had been a class for many years.
The newspaper staff tried so hard to publish stories that were interesting to read . They
spent hours on writing and editing just for us to read it! Please read it!
The journalists in the class spent a lot of time and effort to bring the students the latest
nd greatest. This year brought the newspaper to an end . After 2015, the news can be
found online or through KWHS. Thanks for your words Newspaper!

WORKING TO GO FAR !
As a student progressed through the automotive program, previous
units were reviewed and instruction became more detailed. The students
were instructed on manual transmissions, automotive engines, and
engine performances. Students in this class performed live repair work
on customers vehicles, with proper testing and repair procedures being
learned throughout the school year. These students worked hard everyday
to accomplish their goals.
The students became more aware of the skills and attitude necessary to
work with the public in the automotive service and repair field .

Every single artist has a story behind every picture. From a paint brush to a pencil so much creativity shows that they
have true talent. "Art is a fun way to express yourself, it allows me to explore and creat. It's also a good way to start
off my day and a good way to wake me up. It's better than a regular class ." said, Cydney Smith (12). Creativity is a gift,
some people have it and some people dont. Everyone has some sort of a creative mind, it just takes the right thing to
bring that creativity out. "I like being creative. I like to draw sometimes but not all the time . It has to be something that
clicks in my head in order for me to draw it." said Josue Lopez.(l2) . Students here enjoy every single project that the
teachers throw at them . They seem to get what art is all about and can read what is behind the picture. "Art is really fun
and you can express yourself and I started when I was young .Hsaid, Mo Jones (11). As students draw their portaits and
projects they think of new ideas to do later on .

They are a fun group who looks forward to going to school everyday.
Always smiling and staying positive is what makes this school unique.
Jordan Dumas (12) said, "I like drawing in art, I love my friends, and my
NJROTC teacher is nice." Not a lot of kids have more than one class they like so
Jordan is one of a kind . Jordan has played basketball, softball with his friends
from his school and other schools. He loves hanging with his family and his little
brother.
Desmond Lipscomb Holmes (12) told me that, "He loved playing football with all of
his guys and that he could not wait for next year to see how they play, also math
class is my favorite. I like hanging out with my friends and I like spending more
time with my girl." Desmond has played on Varsity Football ever since his freshman year and will always love the game and teamwork that comes with the art
of football.

--·

Cristopher "Michael" Vansickle (12) told me, " I like PE and listening to
music everyday and hanging with my friends during lunch time." Cristopher loves
shooting hoops during his free time . Being a senior, he is looking toward to graduating and can't wait for what the future brings to him .
They all come to school and leave with a smile on thier faces and that
shows that they all have true hearts. Our seniors will always and will forever be a
Widefield Gladiator!

You are my second son but your Dad's first
The day you were born was one of the happiest on Earth
not just for your Dad and me
But for our entire family
You brought us laughter and love
For you, I thank God above
As Dada and God watch over you
Know that there is nothing that you can't do
You are growing into a man after God's own heart
Just know that I will be here to do my part
I will pray for you and keep you lifted
Because you are strong, intelligent and gifted
You will go far; beyond the sky is your limit
Declare what you want and walk in to it

~rom the day you were born it was clear that you
were determined to a fighter. Being challenged at birth by
your premature entrance to the world was actually just a
head start on life for you . You have grown to appreciate
and grasR OP,portunifies when they are presented . You are
strong -willea ,absolutely stunning presence in the world
and continually strive to achieve excellence. You have
always been very outspoken, and demand to be heard
(often at the expense ot those immediately surrounding
you). But,that has been a very thing , meritocracY, has never
been your forte',and you never choose to settle for anything ress than supenor result in any tasks you take on . As
you move forward in your new journey, never forget that
you should never "settle"for anything less than tile best.
You have a beautiful voice that is meant to be heard, and
we know you will use that voice to do something amazing one day. Please remember to voice your oprnion when
need retain that strong-willed character, continue to strive
for excellence, but never be afraid of failure, be your own
woman, and retain your independence. We wilf miss you a
you pursue your educational goals, always know that we
are only a phone call away. We are very proud of you,and
love you more than words can express. Congratulation
honey.
Love,
Mom and Dad
It's funny, yet intriguing of how easy it is to take
something as srmple aslime for granted. After all, what is
time? As a parent, time has seemed to go by so fast when I
see how much you both have changed. It seems like just a
few years ago you were tiny little nearly transparent alienlookrng crealure hiding behrnd the protection walls of inc
bators fighting for you mere existence in the world.lt was
such a difficult time to have admire you from afar, as you
were too fra_gile to held .But,every day I was there watching
you, wondenng if you were going to make it, and hoprng that you woula be" miracle babies"that would one day
make bold statement to the world. Now,here we are ...
Kayla,
You have always been determined to make your
own path, to walk down the middle of the road !or tne other
side altogether) .You are following the norm and posess
such an outgoing and adventurous attitude that 1ust seems
to draw people Close to you . To have seen the transition
from your tiny birth weight and size to the beautiful fearless young woman youllave become today has been like
watching an action movie. You have often l<ept us on the
edge of our seats with excitement wondering what strange
or exciting new things you will be doing nexf We would
have never imaginea that you would one day compete in
-and complete-the Spartan Race .... twice! !To say that we
are so pround of you would be an understatement, and
a disservice perhaps, but you are something much more
than that. You have become a pretty good baker so we
know that won't be going hungry as you also pursure your
educational goals (mayoe you can feed your sister). There
have been times that we have been hard on you,and that's
partially because we know your potential, and want you
to realize that nothing can stand in your way you when
put your mind to it. Your persistence is evident in so many
ways for so many ways for so many things, that we can
be assured that you wM become an extremely successful
woman. Congratulation on all of your achievement.
We love you so much,
Mom ana Dad

~a1ses loaded, full count, two outs, we hit the ball. DINGER! In the

"You can swing if you want to, it'll be a strike either way."
d Preston Roberds (11). Baseball is one of those sports that just
.,..,.., ,nL-o your life better by playing. "Baseball to me is a big part of
life. #ballislife." said Isaiah Volcic (12). Being able to strike a

feeling ever. No matter if you win or lose, you get to play with

Our Widefield soccer girls have worked hard all
season; they put 100 percent effort into every game. Soccer
isn't the easiest sport; it takes a lot of endurance, focus, and
energy, and the Widefield girls soccer team has all of those
elements. Showing up everyday for practice. They even
showed up for practice when the field was filled with snow.
Their dedication to the sport was shown through out the
season. The whole school is proud of our girls and their
participation.

When it comes to experiencing a once in a life time
thing like being crowned as Prom Queen or Prom King or
even just being on the Royal Court, everyone has a
different way of telling their own experience. Prom Queen
Alexis Athena-Wyatt said, "I am definitely not the coolest
or the prettiest person here, but it was because how I treat
others and care about them that led to me being crowned
Prom Queen. And I hope that can be a lesson for everyone
who feels like they're not cool enough or pretty enough or
funny enough, or even smart enough. Just be yourself and
amazing things will come out of it!"
Prom King Manuel McMillan said, "I was very
suprised, grateful, and happy. I am so glad to be
Widefield High School's 2015 Prom King!"

Sports

Tennis is one sport that takes a lot of dedication. "I love my team.
We work so hard and have so much fun while we do it! I'm
proud of all of us and we are great team.GO get em· Tiger"-Erica
Johnson (ll) People might not know that tennis is a pretty
relaxing sport to be playing with your friend on a summer day.
These girls try so hard to win each match. But it can take a lot a
work to get what they want. Tennis isn't a challenging sport to
play, but you need to keep the eye one the ball.
"Our team is like our own little weird family.Go get em·
tiger! You only live once but you get to serve twice," Ashley
Newman(ll) These girls are like sisters on court because they will
never let each other down, even though if they get hit with the
ball ten times. This years season was about working together,
winning the match, and having fun with friends.
