First of all, it's only fair to give credit where credit is
due: This yearbook was originally designed by the Senior
Edttors, Sue Elliot and
Cathy Cavins; but due to
uncontrollable circumstances, Sue moved during
the summer, and Cathy
also left the staff. Teresa
Norris and I took over in
the middle of the first
emester and followed the
book through to the end.
A few changes had to be
made, of course, such as
cutting out many spring
activities in order to get
the book out in time.
All the patience and
work contributed by the
many students, teachers and secretaries who
were not on the yearbook
staff is greatly appreciated.
We hope this book wins
your approval and brings
back many good memories
in the future years, when
you think back to this
year and the "Class of
Teachers rule with iron fists.

Counseling Helps Students
The counseling department builds a record of your work, aptitudes,
interests, and capabilitie . Your school record, the result of special tests,
information from questionnaires, interviews, reports from teachers and
others-all these serve to build a picture of your per anality. If you can get
to know yourself while you are in high school and to understand why you
feel and think the way you do, your chances for success and contentment
in later life are much improved.
You should see a counselor about the following things:

Joanne Knopf

1. High school schedule and courses.
2. Colleges, technical and specialized chool .
3. Financial aid for further training.
4. Job opportunities and requirements.
5. Your abilities, interests and goals.
6. Achievement in high school, class rank and grade-point-average.
7. Recommendations for further training. employment or military servtce.

Needs Of Each
Individual Student
The teachers at Widefield do their best
tore lize that students have problems and
may need help solving them. These fine
people give of their time and energy to
tho e students who need them, often putting aside their own problems. They must
not only be teachers; they must be, at
times, friends, confidants, and even omputers. Most of all, they try to be there
whenever anyone needs them.
I think we owe them a great de;1l of
gratitude and our sincere thanks.

Mr . Smith, a member of the WHS English department, spent a lot of her time denying rumors that

Will faculty members who parked on the island in front

cars blocking them from in front and from behind? Remember when work was over t 3:20, but it was 4:00

showed up to move it?

This year at Widefield High students
took a greater interest in the things
that were happening at school.
The class officer elections were a
superb example of the enthusiasm
shown. Plenty of posters were "in
evidence, so it wasn't a big secret as to
who was running, and for what.
I am sure everyone has heard of the
Wazuri Club by now. If you haven't,
you might be wondering what it is.
You can read about it on page 29, for
more information, but briefly, it is a
club that is trying to help people
become aware of their prejudices and
maybe in that way to overcome them.
The . Drama Club put on several
plays this year that were considered
successful by the people that saw
them. Two of the plays given were
"The Drunkard" and "My Fair Lady"
If you missed these plays you missed a
lot, but don't worry because there will
be many more plays to come.
Other things that the school year
saw were: NHS, NMSQT, Chess Club,
Deca, Forensics, and Key Club groups
at work. See the following pages for
pictures of them.

Skills such as
shorthand are
taught at WHS

Registration Marks Beginning Of School Year

Every year registration is a hectic
time. Although students rcn't drnitted until 8 a.m., there is alway:;
a long line by 6:00. Droopy-eyed
tudents first fill out the various
cards and papers, then begin a long
morning of standing in lines.
This truly marks the beginning
of the school year.
Cheryl Young, senior, contemplates
her last year at Widefield.

High School Life
For Sophs Begins
With Class Elections
With the beginning of the school year, class officers
had to be elected by the sophomores. Two weeks went
by with posters, and campaign promises until that allimportant day when the final votes were cast.

Days prior to elections so phs plastered the halls at
WHS with campaign signs.

The purpose of the Wazuri Club is to
study and appreciate the culture of the
black man. Through this proces , blacks
can get to know themselves better and
whites can better comprehend what it
means to be black.
To accomplish these ends, the Wazuri
Club involves itself in the literature, drama, music, and thought of the black
people.

Why didn't the swim team take state? Answer first,

Widefield High School was just an ordinary school, until I became a sophomore and began attending it.
Then it was the best, because I was in it. These were more or less my thoughts when I became a new boy in
a new school. As far as grades were concerned, not much was accomplished, mainly because not much care
was given; but, for every imaginable sport I wa there with reserve and reserves of spirit. I thought little,
but I acted constantly.
After a year of sports, and nothing but sports, my Junior year arrived. My school spirit had dulled a little
(don't ask me why), and my sport life also dulled to one or two "favorite" sports. My grades appeared to
be a little better, but now something e1 e was taking up my time- friends, companionship, and fun. Now
there was more to life than just grades and sports.
The year of changes soon faded away and a new and final year awaited me: my senior year. This final
year was very different from my sophomore year, to say the least. Sports no longer held my attention, and
" chool spirit" meant nothing. My grades h.. d risen slightly, but now I had found something new the art of
thinking: not so much about homework, but about life ·n general. Why am I here? What is my purpose in
life? What am I going to do? These, and many new questions and ideas like the e, came to mind.
Now, finally, I have a diploma in my hand, and a memory in my heart. For three years I sat and learned
and thought in Widefield High School, and, like so many other students, I am saying to myself now, "What
comes next?"

Juniors Help Keep
Donna White reflects a moment of solitude.
As many Juniors worked very hard during the year,
what they have done can be seen physically and
mentally. They have brought together many people by
class projects, and created a feeling of togetherness and
friendship. This has made school a lot more enjoyable.
When people work together and it is a success, it will
be reflected in their personality, and in their willingness
to help others. This willingness is seen all over Widefield
High School.

idefield No. 1
Shirley Santisteven and Carol Harvey enjoy watching
Mike Ellis getting water logged by Karen Raichl at the
Junior Car Wash.
Out of all the juniors in this school, a small minority
of about 20 to 25 helped this year on projects such as a
car wash, constructing the Gladiator for Homecoming,
concession selling, etc. This minority does things constantly during the school year to make money for the
Junior-Senior Prom. It's funny: when there's work to be
done, there' hardly anyone to do it.

Part of the educational process involves reading and
research in the library.

There is more to school than homework, tests, and
taking notes. It is also a great place to make new
friends.

Miss Gaillard points out that typing is a valuable
skill for all students.

School is also a great place for making Valentines ...

In addition to the empha!is placed upon training young minds, the curriculum is rounded out by the WHS athletic

For An Explanation Of

This Book, Read This Page
After you have flipped through the pages of this
book I know there must be questions that you thought
would go unanswered. Everything in this book, whether big or small wa done for a reason .
Probably the fir t thing that come to mind is the
complete lack of full-color pictures. Mostly we just
didn't have the money, but we also had trouble with
photography For each color picture used it would cost
us S250 So f we had put in four color shots, it would
have cost us S1.000, and we just can't get that kind of
money. This book cost in the neighborhood of 4.200
to produce this year, and it is e tremely hard for eleven people to raise this kind of money. Most of them
have jobs after school and don't have the time or energy to go to companies and businesses oliciting ads after work. We did u e some single color though. because
it only costs S32 for each page of spot color.
I know that it must bother a lot of people that
coverage of the dances was extremely poor, but you've
got to remember what we have is a learning situation
and we make mistakes many times. Sometimes the roll
of film didn't develop right, or we simply couldn't get
a photographer . Sometimes we had to take pictures
again, and I realize people must have been annoyed at
the inconvenience it cau. ed them; but no matter how
corney this may sound, we are only human .
We couldn't put many things in this year' book
but it wasn't our fault if you are disappointed. Most of
the student body disliked the fall delivery so we gave
you a spring one. In order to do this, though, we had
to meet our last deadline in February. This is because it
takes approximately 70 days to get it completely printed and mailed to us. So this means we had to leave out
things like the spnng sports and prom, and we had to
mock up Graduation.
You may also be considering the cost of the book.

S7 is a lot of money for anyone to part with easily. but
a yearbook really is a good investment. This year we
sold books to 410 students (out of 1700) and if you
multiply 410 by 7 you get S2 ,870, which is over a
thousand short of what we need. Some money is made
in ads, but it is hard to get. If everyo ne in the school
bought a book it would cost $3 and we even would include color shots.
We couldn't allow different professional photographers to take senior pictures if they were to be put
in the yearbook for several reasons. For each differently sized picture we would have to pay S1. Also, with
different photographers, the pictures come in at separate times and this hurts our deadline.
Also orne Semors are probably mad because their
senior credits weren't put in the book . We set a time
when all of you were supposed to turn in your achievements, but weeks later more were ' till dwindling in.
Deadlines aren't set for the fun of it. They are . et because we have our own deadlines to meet (which nobody seems to understand).
Some of the pictures are of extremely poor quality,
but m all cases those were all we could get hold of.
Some people w9uldn't cooperate with us, or, it might
have been a photographer wasn't very good. But I believe that many of the pictures were fine quality and I
think that a good job was done by many people who
tried to help us out with the photography.
I hope you'll really get a kick out of the book,
though. when you see a shot of yourself. or of one of
your good friends. Each picture might jog something in
your memory and make you smile at remembering
what happened this year.
The making of a yearbook is a lot of work, a
headache, and a lot of fun. I really hope you like the
book. I think it's pretty good!
