Band Promotes Spirit

82

Mark Haggar, John Griffith, and Paul Snell were
selected for All-State Band.

The band officers did a fine job in helping Mr.
Berglund take care of details for the band.

This year's winter concert was an outstanding musical
event, combining band and chorus in selections from THE
SOUND OF MUSIC. Also, su h popular melodies as: "How
the West Was Won," favorite tunes of Al Hirt, and the
Latin number, "La Comparsa" were played.
The annual trip to Band Day at Boulder proved to be suecessful as well as pleasurable. The band ended its day
with tired feet and excellent ratings.
Highlight of the year was when band member, John
Griffith, was awarded the honor of touring Europe with the
Band of America.

W arren Knight delivers his Salutatorian a ddress to his fellow students and many
guests.

As the graduating senior looks back
over the past year, he recalls the
excitement of victory and the tears of
defeat. He smiles as he remembers
the pride in every Gladiator's eyes as
we made a place for ourselves in
league sports. He feels pride well up
inside as he wh1spers the words of our
new Alma Mater. There is the
memory of many a cold morning,
standing to see the flag raise proudly in
the brisk air; and sharing with all , the
respect for our country, our school,
and our fellow students .

Tears of joy?

Suddenly the senior finds himself
donned in cap and gown; slowly and
carefully marching to the sounds of
"Pomp and Circumstance. " During this
long walk all the memones of the
past year flash back, and he thmks to
himself, "I will go out into the world
of new adventures to make somebody
of myself, but I can never forget Widefield, of which I am proud to have been
a part."

DENNIS MORGAN- Jr.

TOM FA'r-Sr.

Hockey Tearn Enioys Fast-Paced
This year the great action sport of hockey
came into its own with the "I like action"
WHS student body. Thanks to the exhuberant and professional coaching of Art
Berglund, the team enjoyed a full season of
contact action. The spectators this year
followed the boys clear through the season,
and there was never a lacking of earnest
enthusiasm from the fans.
The Gladiator standout thi year was goalie,
Larry Hazlett, who, by blocking many
attempts, earned a spot on the All-City
Second Team .

Widef1eld 's J. V. baseball team surpnsed the Will
Rogers League by taking win after win; ultimately taking
the league . Behmd the fme pitching and defense of the
glovers, the team did some clutch hitting to pull off
some tight and exciting games. Coach Freeman showed
the Gladiators the way to victory, and taught them the
skills they needed. Widefield's baseball future looks
bright, and we hope the wmning tradition will continue
on through the years .
