take your place in the world without fear, but all

THE WIDEFIElD-CHEYENNE game, a heartbreaking
loss for Widefield, didn't hinder the rest of Homecoming's activities.

THE NIGHT BEFORE the
big game the annual bonfire blazed. Cheerleaders
yelled and the spectators
responded. The queen and
her attendants were
announced, and the
evening was wrapped up
with a winding snake
dance led by Coach
Lawson.

THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR class tied for first place
in the best float division, but the Juniors came out
on top. A lot of work and high hopes for winning
the final prize went into each float.

NATIONAL ASSENIBLIES, LIKE the two illustrated here, were among the highlights of the 1960-61 school year. The
jokes and antics of the Mississippians held the attention of everyone on October 19, 1960. They sang familiar spirituals such as "Joshua Fought The Battle of Jericho", and popular songs such as "He's Got The Whole World In His
Hands ." On November 21, 1960, Mr. Edwin McLean, with the aid of junior MIKE GEORGE, fascinated evel')one by his demonstrations of the uses of the top and gyroscope.

NOVEMBER 7, 1960 WAS A BIG day for WHS English classes. Some 250 students journeyed to Denver for a special showing of Ben-Hur. Subsequent trips to Brad} 's, Colorcldo State Penitential') at
Canon City, and the Rocky Mountain Rehabilitation Center were made b' some Seniors in Life
Problems classes. Business English, Office Practice and Secretarial Training classes visited Bell
Telephone Company and the Farmers' Insurance Company. Drafting classes visited Micro Specialties.

WIDEFIElD'S SCHOOL SPIRIT soared to great heights during the 1960-61 school year. Here students encouraged gladiators in the tight Manitou basketball game on March 3, 1961. In the last few seconds of the heartbreaking game, a
Manitou player sank a jump shot making the final score 42-41.

THE LANGUAGE LAB, new this year, proved to be a
gre~t asset to the students. Tapes, recorded by men
who are natives of France and Spain, are played
through individual earphones to the students' booths.

THE WINTER BAll, HElD December 17, 1960, was sponsored by the Annual and
Newspaper Staffs. The gym was decorated in green and white. The Ball was
accented by a night club atmosphere and tables were set for two and four couples.

DECDI!BER 19, 1960 FOUND members of
the Student COl&lt;ncil busily decorating the
Christmas tree which was placed in the
main hall, in front of the trophy case. This
beautiful tree did much to add to the "Yule
Tide" spirit of WHS.

THE WHS BAND and Chorus presented the Christmas
Assembly on December 23, 1960. The chorus sang
numbers "0 Come All Ye Children", "0 Holy
Night", and "Carol of the Russian Children. " The
band played favorites, "S1lent Night", "Joy to the
World", and "Jingle Bells" while the student body
and faculty joined in singing.

THE GIRLS' CLUB sponsored the annual
Sweetheart Dance on February 11, 1961.
The color scheme was red, white, and
pink, with hearts and cupids dominating
the decorations. The refreshments consisted of punch and heart-shaped cookies.

Season's Highlights
THE 1960-61 GLADIATORS opened their regular eason with the highly respected Salida Spartans, in Salida. This, probably the finest football
game of the season, turned out to be the most important as the Gladiators dropped a 7-0 decision.
Gaining momentum the squad won five straight
PPL games in keeping pace with the Spartans .
Among them was the game against arch rival Air
Academy with Widefield winning 27-6. Tense
moments were had by all as Widefield erked out
a 2-0 win over Fountain in a fine defensive battle
at Washburn Field .
The season's final and homecoming game
against Cheyenne Mt. ended Widefields hopes of
keeping pace with Salida . The Spartans went
through undefeated .

The 1960-1961 basketball season opened with the Pikes Peak
League tournament. Johnny Yates, the 1960 tournament's leading scorer, was the only letterman to start the season. John
Meese, senior All- League returning letterwinner, sat out the
tournament due to a football injury. The Gladiators won the consolation bracket.
fter the' season got underway, the starting line-up included
senior letterwinners, Johnny Yates and John Meese as guards,
senior John Hartman and sophomore Chuck Mangum as forwards,
with Harold Larson, a junior, playing center.
Jolm Meese started the regular season by scoring 32 points
in the opener against Air Academy. He finished the season as
the team's leading scorer with 236 points and was fourth in the
P .P .L. Johnny Yates was the team's second leading scorer with
190 points. Harold Larson led the team in rebounding with 122
rebounds. Six foot-three Chuck Mangum was second in therebound department.
The regular season ended with the Gladiators in fifth place
with a 6 won, 8 lost record and an 8-10 season record.

points for a 3. 9 average. Dick Chenoweth had 56 points
for a 3 . 8 average. Dick Chiddix had 52 points for a 3 . 5
average. Ken Rhyal made 51 points for a 3. 9 average,
and Tim Carmichael shot 23 points have a 1. 9 average.
GLENN WHEELER led the Freshmen team in scoring
with 92 points for a 6.1 average; Tom Pearson 67 points
for a 4. 7 average; Bill Horn 63 points tor a 4. 8 average;
Joe Pyle 66 points for a 4.4 average and Ken Smith 46
points for 3.5 average rounded out the top five scorers.
Smith's 16 points against St. Mary's was the year's highest output in a single game.

THE 1960-61 WRESTLING SEASON was the most successful in the school's three year
history of competition. After finishing 3rd in the six team Pikes Peak League, Widefield captured the District Wrestling Tournament at Fountain. During this tournament
DICK KINDSFATER, JOHN JANITELL, and GARY JURGENS qualified for the State
Tournament in Denver, February 24-25. DICK and JOHN captured the consolation championship while GARY went to the finals in the Championship bracket, capturing 2nd place .

THE SEASON STARTED with two returning senior lettermen, JOHN MEESE and DARELL
KOENIG. JOHN MEESE, the leagues fmest catcher, had to be used as a pitcher during part of
the season. DARELL KOENIG started as a shortstop and finished the season as the leftfielder.
Junior pitcher ART CLARK provided the highlight of the season with a two hit victory over
Florence. JOHN MEESE led the team with his . 500 batting average. DARELL KOENIG, was
second in batting with . 310. Junior first-baseman EDDIE BYNUM was third in batting with
.294. The eason ended with the following lineup: JOHN MEESE c., ART CLARK p., EDDIE

THE WIDEFIELD TRACK team had one of the most
successful seasons in the history of the school. The
Gladiators participated in 12 meets getting two firsts and
four seconds. The Gladiators also took a second in the
District track meet on May 20. The thinclads qualified
eight for the state track meet at Boulder, Colorado . Ten
of the school records were broken during the season.
Next year the Gladiators will have a track to work on and
nine returning trackmen.

THE LETTERMEN'S CLUB sponsored two major
activities this year -- the Simms Super vs. the Widefield faculty basketball game and the annual sportsmen's banquet. The teachers triumphed in the ball
game and four boys received awards at the banquet
for superior work in the field of athletics .

Lettermen's Club banquet, mixed humor with
an interesting talk on the subject of the importance of academic study as well as athletics

THE PURPOSE OF the Girls' Club
is to show the girls the importance of

This year the club has had four big

club meetings, the girls enjoyed guest
speakers and various demonstrations
that contribute to a young lady's personality.

�Home Economics Club Performs
Community Service

As VICKI GILLESPIE and HEATHER MILLER
look on, BEVERLY MASON is crowned queen
of the Dog Patch dance, sponsored by the
Home Economics Club in November. One
hundred and fifty cans of food were collected
at the dance and given to the Salvation Army
for Thanksgiving.

graders composed the Junior High's
program. The seventh grade league
of six teams ended with the Vikings
on top and a 5-0 record: The five
eighth grade teams found the Falcons
with a 4-0 record champs at the end
of the season. Sproul Junior High
was host to an eighth grade tournament of Pikes Peak League schools
in which Harrison took top honors.
